My apologies for another rear bumper thread- but i need to do it to give me some motivation to finish it up. I made a last minute move to do a dual swingout---so progress pics are starting about half way thru. View attachment 363700View attachment 363702
From underneath- both plates lined up to allow the spindle to slide thru and be perpendicular. Chopped the spindle .25" below the lower plate and welded up so that leverage of Lukes 3500lb HD spindle is against both upper and lower plates vs. against the weld.
Should be a bit less flex in each spindle and the plates dispersing weight across the DOM corners.
Are you going to be able to take the swing arms off of the spindle to change out bearings? I know you got them on but once you have the arms welded on it might be more difficult to tilt and slip it up and off the spindle.

Actually- this is bolt on- so i can take it off throw it on to lube or change out bearings. I designed it to use all the stock bolt holes for the factory hitch and spare tire carrier crossmember all with grade 8 bolts. Added to this are two monster grade 8s. I will try to snap a shot tomorrow of it bolted on when i do some more measuring for the swingouts. I forgot what size these two big ones are---but here they are next to a quarter:
Most definitely going to brace that wing also. I originally contemplated routing the exhaust over the bracing- but recently hacked it off just inside the frame.......so i will probably finish that brace this weekend.
i Think it's an interesting design. Looks like you have adequate mounting points on the frame, using heavy enough steel. I think it looks pretty good. I personally wouldn't have taken the extra time to cut into the bosy. I would rather keep objects that much farther away from the body panels.. just my $.02. Anxious to see the finl product, keep posting pics.
Theres actually quite a bit more room between the shell and the body than the pics show. If that bumper gets pushed in - that scalloped area is pretty thin guage and will just allow the carrier shell to push it around.
Im going to redrill the bumper mounting points to have a second set which actually allows the whole bumper to have two mounting distances.............one for daily driving that sticks out a few inches in the event of an old lady smacking into me...............and one that tucks in a bit closer for a little better departure angle. It only takes about 5-10min to bolt it up and make the change.
This whole project started when the Chief of Police in my town---rear ended my OEM bumper at a stop light in an unmarked car. He was on the phone calling it in when i had walked back to survey the damage to his car(still having no idea this guy was the PO-PO)..........Imagine the look on my face when he jumps out of his vehicle and the first thing i notice is a gun strapped to his chest.........i thought i was about to get gunned down by some crazy old grey haired dewd. It actually turned into quite a scene as every cop-cruiser in town showed up with big grins at the boss. The young punk 22 year old officer fisrt on the scene had a grin from ear to ear when he asked me how the Landcruiser was and i told him......."i think the trucks fine--but your boss may have severed my spinal cord".......we all had a laugh.
