hi guys and thanks for taking the time to read this! i have a 92 toyota 4-runner v6 sr5 4x4! i am having problems with it starting, here's the deal.... i've already changed the fuel filter, checked the battery , checked the alt. , and changed out the cold start injector. this is what the truck has and is doing.... it will turn over an over ( i have a batt. charger hooked up so my battery won't die) like i said it will turn over an over and then after numerous tries it will slowly ( as i pound on the gas pedal) start BUT once it is running an all warmed up it will have NO starting problems the rest of the day! NONE! after she sits for awhile 8 to 10 hrs , it happens all over again! it's even worse when its cold! what do i do? and yes i do the work on my truck myself!:D i have a book! please help me, this is the only vehicle i have right now! thanks for your time.

It sounds to me like you could have a slow leak in a fuel line, and the pressure is bleeding off overnight... If you run it in the morning then wait till the evening (10-12 hours) does it do the same thing? Have you smelled any gas? When the pressure has bled off it can take 10-20 seconds to fire up which seems like an eternity when you are cranking... FYI with the fuel injection system, pumping the gas pedal doesn't do anything. :D Holding the pedal down can help when it does fire up by telling it to rev up, but other than that it's not much help.

A common place for a fuel leak on the 3.0 is the fuel pressure dampener which is at the rear of the fuel rail on the passenger side of the engine under the intake manifold. It's a pain to get to unfortunately...

Here is the fuel pressure damper/dampener? (can't remember which it's called right now...) it is circled in blue.

I would suggest checking all around the truck for leaks while it's running (IE while the fuel line is pressurized). The fuel lines come off the top of the tank and run up the inside of the passenger side frame. Then up into the engine compartment and under the intake.

Jerod,

I'm not familiar with the 3.slow, but suspect it's like the 22re and 3fe. Where is the fuel pressure regulator? I'm guessing it's at the other end of the fuel rail. It also could be a problem if it's not holding pressure.

Tink, try something.

Find the diagnostic box. I believe on your truck it's next to the fuse block under the hood. Open it up and find the B+ and the Fp terminals (I think those are what you need). Short them with a paper clip and you should hear the fuel pump working if you walk back to the tank [edit: key should be on]. It can be hard sometimes to get them shorted correctly, which is why you need to make sure you hear the pump working. Let it spin for a minute, then try and start the truck.

If it starts right away then you are not holding pressure in the line when the is engine off. The two sources for retaining pressure are the regulator on the fuel rail, and the check valve in the pump itself.

Good luck.

The fuel pressure regulator is circled in Red. It's job is to let excess pressure back to the tank, so if it's leaking down you would not have an external leak.

The diagnostic box that Pappy is talking about will look like this:

I think Pappy's test is a good place to start too.

also as stated by pumping the gas pedal while trying to start it actually can make your problem worse. the computer can actually stop fuel from getting to your injector. it is a fail safe to keep your engine from flooding out.

I reported on your post Jerod..All of the above should be added into the FAQ's! :hillbilly:

Dang, you really did hit the report button. Dude, there is a thread in the stickies at the top called FAQ Submission Thread. Best to post it there than report simple things like this to Woody.

I sure hope Woody doesn't ban you for that. :grinpimp:

Pump the pedal all you want, it won't hurt. It's not possible to flood an EFI engine.

I suspect the cold start injector. Even though it's been replaced, there could be a wiring fault. Did you check to make sure gas is squirting out when you're cold starting?

:ban: Meh, he'd likely chew my a$$ in a pm instead. Sorry but I wanted it to be caught as I was out of town, using someone else's broadband, and I'm amazed that our service is actually working well and fixed here (*had it down to be fixed while out of town).

Besides, I plead sleep deprivation anyhow.. :steer: :princess: The little one's keeping us up all night these days.

Sweet! BTW, we got the other Runner going and likely fixed both the broken fan and mia stud as well as the surging issue. He made it back up there and only had to stop really quickly outside of Redding to fix a CEL* that came up. Had him reset the ecm and it ran good all the way. He has your club's and Wristy's contact info should anything come up the next few weeks and he needs help since you're both local.
:D

*Likely just some carbon getting pushed through b/c I cleaned out the tb when fixing the surge and idle issue..

Also, ditto, the original poster should let us know if it works or not.
