OK, I am sick of searching all of this forum and others..and chatting with businesses that don't deal with our vehicles or quite frankly just don't seem to care...I just don't want the rubber coated or faux leather crap anymore the 90's and up came with.
Why is it all the Land Cruiser guys can get theirs reproduced, but we can't? AAARGHHH!

I need to replace a 1980's resin 5 speed shift knob for a truck. It is basically the same style that came in our trucks, Celicas and the Supras. Most of the one's for the trucks were a black resin with the pattern in a clear plastic face with a silver background and chrome letters. Some were red background, and if you were really lucky you could grab a knob off of a Supra since those came matched to the interior accent, as in grey or brown resin instead.

*I want a grey, but will take a black, must have a silver background, and it must be 5 speed R150F/151 patterned.

**If there's a resin transfer case shift knob with a similar pattern to the R150F cases I'd go for that one too.

In other words, like this, but in resin..

or these in resin..

They are out there, and no I am not gonna call Marv (Spector Off-Road) and bug him again, he, like a few others either didn't understand or just didn't care about what I was asking since it isn't land Cruiser stuff.

*Mods, please keep this in our forum side for a bit because, well, yeah it is a borderline classifieds post, but I tried that and everyone couldn't help, because again, "...(blah, blah, blah...Land Cruiser, sorry bro, blah, excuse, excuse) sorry." I don't want excuses or apologies, i want help either getting one or figuring how to reproduce them, even if I have to invest some into it.

***I can't be the only one, right??

[EDIT]: Both amaurer (Andrew) and Mark (mmw68) in this site provide shift knob alternatives.

Amaurer's knobs are reviewed in here and a link has now been added to mmw68's knobs below in post#20.

yep, you are the only one :D

I snagged mine from an old Celica Supra in the junkyard, I think it's actually leather with a neat green background and silver shift pattern. My best advice would be to run around a junkyard and look in every manual trans car or truck you see. Just grab the exact one you want. Worst case if the threads don't match (not likely, most can are can be forced as they are just soft plastic), you can put a thin film of vaseline on the shifter, a thin film of JBWeld in the shift knob and screw it on - the JB will set to the proper threads, and as long as the Vaseline wasn't wiped off during install it should keep the knob from being permanent

I took the leather* off of an SR5 knob, used a clear epoxy to fill in the gap around the shift pattern, and now have a nice black shifter knob with the cool gray center...

Pics or I call b.s. on you

Corax, I have a nice sunburn already from looking for three days already..more tomorrow around here then I'll try calling Johnathan in Sacramento. The problem is all the Esse's steal them out here. Thus why I'm searching, I had one and a :bang: smog tech left my doors unlocked. *Luckily I didn't have anything of value in there and actually had the rubber knob to use for now.

Someone should step up and make these, market them here, T.O.R.C. forum, drift and Corolla forums, the market's there, just no production. Also, I know someone doing a 62 series w/ a 3.4-R151F so I know he'd love a set..

NorCalBorn just trickled over to the 40-forum and found some of the knobs I've been making for the 40-series - I thought I'd cross post so I can suck some money out of you guys too.... ERRRRR... I meant.... so I can supply you guys the knobs you've always wanted. :D

Anyway, the deal I've been running is - I'll duplicate any knob you send me in resin of the color of your choice, plus CNC-engraved graphics/patterns of your choice in the face for $30.

There are some examples in my original thread:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/280462-i-made-new-tcase-shifter-knob.html

Or you can find info on my website:
Kickass Stuff For Your 40-Series

As for this particular knob, I generally mold right from the original, so stitches and all you typically be reproduced in the resin. If thats what you want then great, but if you want just the shape to be retained and not the stitching thats possible but a little more work.

I bought my son a really nice wood lathe for his HS graduation in 2004. Here's a shift knob he made for a friend's Celica:

I've asked him to make me a custom one every birthday and Christmas since then... I'm still waiting.

Speaking of knobs, interesting background on the photo in this guy's eBay ads...

Ken your a dirty old man :grinpimp:
And that knob steve milled is sweet. did he cut and inlay the center piece by hand or what??? things frikin super complex. Ide be askin for one every christmas too!

:D Ken, tell him if he doesn't make you one you'll "..give all your forum buddies [his] contact info so [we] can bug him for some..." for us. :p

*Just sent Drew a reply as I'll actually be in his area this weekend. I'm thinking I might just give him my original knobs (as I've a spare set now) to let him mold them up and this way I at least get a case knob and maybe I'll pick out a shift knob that'll work at the same time. :D

**Maybe it would be a good meet/greet and into for Drew into our crowd, what do you guys think??

*Religious aspect or just how it turned out if I can inquire?

Bump :D

Dropped off my donor spare set of knobs at amaurer's place tonight and he'll start on them soon enough, I'll post up when they're all done so you all can bug him if you like how they turn out. :) Very nice guy to chat with and we can't wait to see 'em done! :D

I second the wood idea, it feels better than plastic at -10 F or so. Best part is you are polishing your knob as you drive.

NorCalBorn came by to "try on" a few of the knobs I had laying around. He decided on a 60-series landcruiser 4-speed knob for the transmission, and a 1979+ 40-series transfer case knob. Was nice to meet ya.

Top pic: NorCalBorn's finished knobs.

Bottom pic: Just showing I can also do them in grey. (That knobs is a <1979 40-series TC shifter, but probably won't work for you guys as it tapers down to a teeeeeeny M8 thread)

 Looks like I'm taking short detour drive after I finish up in the afternoon. :D

FWIW (Also mentioned this to Drew when initially playing with the "demo" knobs) I really hated the factory knobs from day 1, and know what feels right and what doesn't I can't wait to throw them on, one less thing to get done that's on my list. Right now, the project's down to the little things, and in some way this little thing was a big thing to me, thanks Drew, see ya tomorrow. :D

TTT.. (ToTheTop!) aka..Bump..

I love 'em!! :flipoff2: Thanks for a great job and taking care of a minor detail for me, I can't wait to get the new(er) shift knob on and goto town!
(erm..out of town...ummm, wheeling...well, I know everyone get's the pun at any rate ;p )

+1 IMHO as far as feedback on dealing with Andrew, nice guy, nice lady/g-f, and a cool social canine to boot, the FJ he owns and uses for a DD is just icing on the cake. Go out and buy one! :D
