Done! Well almost- Left to do-can basket and cooler basket and a chrome treadplate trim piece to make it look pretty.

What was I looking to do- Well, working on the cruiser is a real joy and I want to keep it around for a long time, so time for some stout bumpers. I have seen lots of great ideas and they overall bumper design has come a long way from SROR first ones a few years back. I have kept hearing the same complaints-

Dont like have to open the swing arms every time you wanted to get into the back.
Kaymar is to bulky
You are stuck with the attachments that you decide to put on the swing arms.
Cost
I am not a fan of the big red handle latches
I am not a fan of really skinny bananna hammock bumpers- I dont see a lot of huge rocks that I need to get over here where I take my truck.
Lack of rear quarter panel protection

So I tried to blend a high departure bumper with a a flush mounted system of removable attachments suited to what you want and so that I don't have to run around town looking like I am going on safari when I am only going to the Golden Corral Buffet. (My truck is my daily driver) And by reducing the amout of welding - reduce the cost.

Using a 3/16 sheet I had it bent 5 times. I have used Iron Pig spindles and De-Sta-Co 7500lb latches. I am building one arm for a tire and the other for a ladder. You would be able to pick either side for attachments as the footings are universal. Off the ladder you will be able to carry fuel and water cans. Or a cooler, or a big ole basket. A bike rack and awing is the works as is a hammock seat that can be used with the arms open. Lots of stuff for camping etc.

In the pics the swing arms are just 3 inch channel to give you an idea what I am doing- I am using 3/16 2x3X 22 tube. Latches will be mounted to plates that are welded to the arms and the latch will be recessed and mount horizontal to keep them out of the way. 2x3x11 channel will be used for the footings and mounted with 1/2 inch grade 8 bolts. When I am done camping I just remove the attachments and replace the bolts into arms, put the tire carrier etc in the garage. The rest of the time I can leave arms on and use the tail gate normally

I am redoing the wings to make them a little more attactive and extending panel protection about 3/4 of the way to the mud flap.

I also am going to add a 2.5 inch receiver-

nice!!

any other pics?

more pix please.

love the concept, having trouble seeing it my mind (blonde). does the stump on spindle hold the detachable accessory?

brilliant. might have a dog idea for you later on....

That is not the real swing arms- that is the real spindle after with cut .5 inchs out of the body and tack welded it for fitment- I will have the arms up later next week- They will look like every other arm out there but a little thicker and placed within the bumper instead of on top- Like ARB does for the 100 and 80 series-I got the idea for the attachments to swing arm from 4x4 labs- Their bumper was a huge inspiration as far as being to switch attachments out-

take a 2x4- this is you swing arm- now a make an upside down u over the swing arm- nice and snug over it and then run a bolt all the way through it. The nut actually will be recessed into the main bumper and if you lock the latch then no one can steal your tire and ladder cause if they try to undo the bolt it will just free spin after a few tuns.

I try to get more photos up - might be a while- I am going to be on vacation in Costa Rica 20-27.

I hope to make it to the Razor Back Rumble in Hot Springs on June 5. My sons Bday party is that day so once its over I want to hop in the car and bolt up there to show it off-

LED light that will come on when the arms open up and a on off switch located somewhere easy to turn it off if you want it off- like a on- off -auto dome light switch- light will be behind and cut out of the main body shell- Super Bright LED unit weather proof.- Might do LED brake lights as well if it looks right cut into main bumper face

side wings- being re cut to include more qp protecting and clean up the lines a little bit- In the pic we are holding up 2 different pieces of of metal to give you an idea of the new lines of the wings- they will have a bend a "V" at the bottom for extra strength

Surf,

This bumper is sweet man! Any idea how much you're going to be selling these for? Ball park? This summer I was going to take on a similar project, but if this is a better alternative I'd be interested in buying one, or buying it as a kit and welding it myself.

Let me know. This is turning out exactly how I'd build mine.

Where does one buy them brass sleeves I see on the pic below ?
looks good !!

Do you have a stop for being fully open. I have a bumper that used to swing open and if not checked would slam the tire into my rear quarter panel, causing this crappy dent.

Nice!

My arm-chair suggestion would be to add gas struts for the swings. Looking forward to seeing this completed, there may be a Kay-Mar in the "For Sale" section soon...

Nice looks great

Stops will be put in with a pin and handle that it holds it open at 110-120 degrees-

Iron Pig brass bushing and spindels

Cant do shocks (I think the swing arm is too close- .5 inch) but I am going to check it out cause they are sweet.

I am about 75 percent done -

I am not a fan of the big red handle latches

where did you get your big handle latch?
is it a DE_STA_CO latch....2000#?
I'm looking for a bigger latch like that, but de-sta-co doesnt have a good photo showing the actual size.
Thanks

Kit form will be available- and should be an easy build cause the is a lot welding vs other designs-

Also am putting 3/4 clevis hitches in through the bumper to frame mounts-

I don't have latch part number cause they are in the back of the truck- at the dealer- getting ac fixed... But they are the 7500 lb ones de-sta-co makes with catch it is almost 90 bucks. Maybe more. Same size as the 4000lb one with the red handle one - I ordered it from the directly

Found the latch numbers- TC-385-R Pull action latch- toggle lock- $93.50 Latch has the safety lock

and clamp TC-385102- 16.9

The top is 5.5 inches out
the face is 5.5 inches down
the bottom 45 angle is 2 inches long
Top to bottom it is 7.5 inches- But it also sits a 1.5 higher than stock- Tail gate drops just fine.

It does look fat across the sides- thats why I am extending qp protection some to give it a better line and protection. Does this bumper make my ass look fat?:hhmm:
