I thought I would start a thread of my '87 FJ60 frameoff restoration project because it was a little different than the others. Mainly because i'm starting at the ground up using a like new frame from an '88 FJ62. I take plenty of pics of everything I do for my own personal collection and thought it might help others thinking of doing the same conversion. I'll update the thread as the project progresses with attention to the changes that have to be made from the 62 to 60 frame mode mainly at first. Anyone that have accomplished this changeover please feel free to chime in on any tips.

Two quick lessons learned-

After six cans, Gunk Engine Brite appears to be dyed off road diesel fuel in a spray can. Next time buy a gallon of diesel insted.

Why let all those nice Tyvek suits i've aquired over the years working on hazmat sites accumulate dust in the basement when I can just ruin a nice set of camo pants pressure washing?:doh:

Wow that is a nice frame I'm doing mine (60) also with a 62 frame but I had to take out the rear frame inserts on both sides because they were delaminating but the rest is good.

Mine was real bad as well. But check this new puppy out!:hillbilly:

First order of business is the transmission mount. I need to surgically cut off the four side brackets and move the whole works forward about a foot. Once I cut them all free I think i'll set the motor and trans into the frame to work out the motor mount issues and give me the right spot to reweld the transmount.

You can do it!!!!!

Work has been kicking my butt for the last month with OT but I won't complain as it gives me more to sock away for the cruiser.

Cruiser Dan got me a brandy new rear spring hanger to replace the one that was brutally decapitated and missing.

Built me a "Cruiser Creeper". :hillbilly:

Hopefully i'll get to some work now that it's in the garage.

Why the new spring hangers? Setting up cheby 63"s or something?

My suggestion is to galvanize then POR the frame after the fabrication is done

X 100. I know that you said the 60 will never see the winter again, however I would galvanize as well. I know that there a few places in Newark that will do it for about $500.00

Dewalt 6 in cutting wheels on a 4 inch grinder w/no guard and a GOOD stout pair of leather gloves and a face shield and go to it. It will slice the weld nice and clean about $2.00 a piece

Yeah, I have a friend that tried that technique. We called it the "spinning wheel of death".

He was on crutches for at least 2 months. Blade bound up, popped out, ran right across his kneecap, neatly slicing it in 2 pieces. He still limps, that was 2 years ago.

Nice frame.

No , the person at Cruiserparts apparently thought it was easier to burn off the hangers to remove the rear and leaf springs than to cut the spring mount bolts which I know can be a pain in the cubes to remove. One was missing the other has all the rivets partially burned off.

Yep, i'm gonna look into the galvanizing. There is a place south of me in Folsom, American Galvanizing Company ,that does alot of big stuff. Hopefully they'll do it.
I need to get the motor and tranny fit first as well as any other major modifications.

Wow. I have never heard of anyone doing that before.

Got a few hours into her this past weekend...

Restored the charcoal cannister (with a good core from a MUD member)...

Ground, drilled and punched out the burned rivets for the hangers. Got grade 10 bolts and grade 8 nuts from McMaster and torqued them down to 75 lbs. I think i'm gonna run a few weld beads to make sure they don't move as the bolts didn't fit as snug as the rivets.

Next dilemma...
How do I nut the front hangers when the frame is boxed?

Just weld them... you are going to do it anyway...

That frame is just... awesome. I'm curious as to why you (and others) are going with a 62 frame rather than a 60 frame? Is it just that they are newer and in better shape? more available?

i did a comparison when I had mine side by side. A lot of it has to do with availability and condition, but there are some minor differences...
