Wow, this is great.

The frame is looking really good. From the looks of your oil pan you might want to check for leaks around the bottom. Mine looked like that and all of the oil (8qts) came out after getting a bath at the car wash.

I'm not sure if it leaked back from the front seal or if it's rotted thru under the skid plate on the pan. Either way already have a new one in the basement parts room from CDan.:hillbilly:

Picked up another piece of the puzzle a couple weeks ago from Jim C.
Looks like I took a time machine back to Arakawa circa 1988 and slipped one out the back door..:hillbilly:

You are both ambitious AND talented!

Keep up the great work!

Wish my ff was that clean.

Yeah I was EXTREMELY pleased when i picked her up at Jim's.
I had him put an ARB locker in it as well as replace all the bearings, ect. Setting up gears needs to be left to the professionals in my opinion. I saw what happens to them when not done right.

He had the housing powdercoated by a friend.

Wow - he did a nice job on that FF --

I let the pros do my ARB too, and I'm glad I did!

*Oddball question..

How come everyon still uses the cork gaskets when rebuilding your straight 6's instead of just switching to FIPG or even the silver General Motors gasket material like on the LT-1's? It seems that it would be a far better choice these days than having to redo the dried out and cracking cork every few years.

Just curious, never tried it yet, but I've always considered it.

I second that question about Cork vs. newer material oil pan gaskets.

just curious ;)

Dunno. Cause that's what CDan sells?;)
My original pan gasket has been on since 1987 so I don't see that as being too bad. It leaked a little on the ends to concur with it's cruiser legacy. :hillbilly:

The last of the rivet nuts when in last week. What an awesome tool. The factory punched holes are all there to covert to the 87 skidpan but they're not threaded. Hence the tool. Drilled them out to 13.50.
Did the skidpan and for the front exhaust bracket.

Was asking my FIL's corvette restorer friend if he knew of a place that would sandblast then paint the frame in one spot. Without a big compressor i would be pissin in the wind.
He recomended this place Johnson's Powder Coat that I didn't even know was there not to far from us. He says he wouldn't do anything but powder coat to his vette restos.
Sounded good to me. Quoted me about 8 bills for sandblasting and coating the frame and seven other pieces of bracketry, crossmembers and skidpan. Dropped it off 7-2.

Picked up my frame and parts from the powder coater. What an awesome job they did. Sprayed the powder on heavy and all inside the frame box as well! Now I gotta grab a few friends to help me carry it in the garage.:hillbilly:

powder coated frame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very nice.

What do you figure the bare chassis weights? Did you have lots of trouble loading it?

cheers

Good question on weight. Four guys can carry it no problem. Three guys, plan your moves.:hillbilly:

I just unloaded it myself using my engine crane, some harbor freight rolling dollies and fancy rigging. My six year old and me started bolting on some exhaust brackets. Sure is nice working with clean better than new parts and new bolts.

I now need to order my OME spring set up.

Nice build Joe_E, looks like we are on similar path's. While I was busy hoarding parts I should have been hoarding money, that powder coated frame looks awesome. Not to mention the other goodies!

Thanks but to be honest the powder coat deal just came about in a matter of days.
With my work schedule now I didn't want to have a semi sandblasted semi rusting semi painted frame in the yard so I farmed the job out. For the life of me I couldn't find a paint shop to sandblast and paint it in the same place.
FIL told me of this local PC place . Sandblast and PC, sure no problem they said.
I can't tell you how stoked I am with the job they did. My six year old and myself started bolting stuff on this afternoon.
