Really long story short, I have a SBC 283, a 1976 wiper motor, "newer" style steering column, unknown year gauge cluster and Painless wire harness. I did manage to get a wire harness for this so I can use the switches, but i don't know what year it's from, and was hoping someone on this site could look at these pictures and try and tell me the year of the harness so I can try and figure out how to wire up these switches. The Hazard switch has a light in it.

The steering column actually has 3 plugs, I'll attache the other picture after these are up.

Coolerman's web site is only up to 1971 from what I can tell, and the light switch seems to be (according to the Painless wire schematic) a 75 or 76 based on the amount of wires. There is a switch that is just a twist, 3 position switch with no writing on it, not sure what it's for. I'm completely wiring challenged to say the least, so thanks for all your input on this.

OK i'll take a picture of them in about 5 hours and post, but just to be clear, the gauges didn't come with the wire harness, it was a separate part. basically everything on this cruiser was pieced together from a part over there, and another one over there.
What I was trying to do was get a completed harness and use the switches, but they don't really look like early 70's so i may of gotten a bad harness.

the pulls of the Lights and Hazard switches look '74 and later (early models have pictographs, no text)

does the instrument cluster have the clip-on (later) or screw-type (early) speedocable attachment ?

yup, later style - with blinker indicators in the instrument panel

so, your harness is at least '74 or later

The harness didn't come with this instrument panel. I don't know what year either one is. In fact, Ive spent the last 5 hours looking through coolerman's schematics, and the only thing that matches up is the Heater Blower switch for a 73 or 74, but none of the other switches match the schematics.
So I will go off the assumption that the Bezel is a 74 or later basted on what you just said.

Are the wiring color codes for the 1978 schematic the same color codes as all the prior years?????

the '78 wire codes should be pretty similar to '76 wire colors - find a wiring diagram appropriate to your truck or harness - search the FAQ/Tech Links

in fact, most systems have the same wire colors over the years, including brake/turn signal lights and wiper system

white-black stripe is always ground

the connectors are different over the years, with fewer differences in later years

So i just got a response from Painless saying they don't have wire schematics for a 77 harness or an 80-85 steering column. I've been looking on this site for hours looking for anyone that has rewired there 77 or later to see how they did it, but nothing. Even Coolerman's site is all early 70's stuff.

Can anyone direct me to a link for how to hook up these switches, or better yet, how to test the switches and convert the wire colors I have, to early 1970's wire colors so i can find the Painless wire color to hook up?????

Painless has the same color wires for left and right, you'll have to match your lay-out of the Painless harness with the Toyota OEM wiring diagram for your year - Painless supplies a more or less generic instruction leaflet for wiring a 40

the blinker/brake/hazard circuits must be reconstructed according to Toyota specs if you want to use Toyota switches

the switches look the same or at least some do--of the March 73 cruiser I had. Somewhere in the 74+ timeframe they had this cluster, with the clip on speedo, printed circuit board and the round black plug.

There is a '78 wiring diagram in the tech links here:

That hazard switch doesn't look like my '77, I also think that instrument cluster is pre-'77. If I had to guess on the harness I would guess '76 or so, but that's totally a WAG.

A Haynes manual isn't that expensive and has wiring diagrams for a lot of different model years.

A twist, 3-position switch with no writing on it sounds like an aftermarket switch, maybe for a heater fan or something.

OK, so i got a set of 78 switches from another MUD user, and am now ready to start.
Long story short, I am so confused I can't see strait, and I haven't even started. My plan is to write down every wire # (painless wire #) that goes to each switch wire, then install and hook up the wires. I'm going to start with the steering column.
I'm going to be asking questions and documenting every wire # and every switch wire color and when I'm done I will do a separate post and run down every connection I did so future members can just follow along. This is something I can't seem to find on this site, so hopefully I'll be the first, but not last to do this.

So this is where i'm at for the night. 1977 steering column wires and how they ring out. (column is not hooked up)

6 position plug:
GB
GW
GY
RG
RW
GY
With the right turn signal on I get continuity with GY to GW adn RY to RW
With the left turn signal on I get GW to GB and RY to RW
With the lever in the center position, i get RY to RW

Can anyone help with what wire color does what???
