I need some help. I normally hang out in the 70 series section and haven't posted in here for a very long time. Turns out it has been a very long time since I've wrenched on one of my 40s... but I'm in the process of getting my BJ42 through an out of province inspection and ready for ACT2010 and I'm in need of some help.

Several years ago I bought an ARB for my BJ42 (semi floater rear). The locker was installed but never hooked up and on the way back from a run the driveshaft blew off and the diff was hooped.

The locker was removed from my 42 and my ex put it into his 87 BJ74 (full floater front). No, I'm not gay and yes, I'm a chick. Last Spring he blew up his front pinion. Upon the demise of our relationship I was blessed with the return of my locker in his broken differential as a parting gift.

So...

Now I'm trying to get my air locker (RD 124 I believe) installed back into the rear axle of my BJ42. We've run into trouble. The set-up diff is in the housing, and the axle stubs and c-clips have been installed, but where do we go from here? Three questions.

1) How is the pinion shaft removed to install the pinion spacer (or spider block)? It does not appear to be a matter of removing a retaining bolt like with the stock diff. Does the circled screw play a role in pin retention or removal?

2) Since the locker was last installed in the front of a different cruiser and my parting gift did not include the ARB spider block/thrust block... can the stock pinion spacer be used in its place? Or will a spider block need to be sourced?

3) Does anyone happen to have a link to a set of proper installation instructions?

A few pics…. Note evidence of the loving modification that occurred when the first pinion gave way.

Yes. Remove the circled screw. Inside there is a cross shaft retaining pin. It is removed with a small threaded tool that came with your ARB originally. Look for it in the same baggie that hold the C-clips, or you might need to order one of those as well.

Yes, you need the ARB spider block.

The ARB website itself has more manuals.

Good luck! Looks like some, ummm, "fun" when that pinion let go.

Yes, you need to remove that Allen-head cap screw, then under it is a pin that has a threaded hole in it. The ARB should have come with a little tool for pulling that pin out, but if you don't have it you can use a long 6-32 screw.

That does not look like the original pin retaining bolt, so get one of those from ARB too. The pin itself is burrried down in the hole where the retaining bolt is, and you fish it out with a tool supplied by ARB, but I have used a small allen wrench to fish it out in a pinch.

You need the spider block and the spacer block. The center block in that ARB is 2 pieces.

If you didn't already, have the internal o-rings changed out (that may be old enough to have the original large "U" ring inside the carrier, which is a frequent leaker and the newer internal o-ring set up can be retrofitted.

Also make sure the o-rings on the air input donut thing by the side gear are new.

Edit: Looking at your pics, that locker has seen some hard times!

Hey Charla,

Here's a link to the parts list: http://www.arb.com.au/resources/pdf/airLockers/2-RD124.pdf

I'll dig out and scan an installation manual this morning, if you need me to. It'll be a pretty large file.

If you are going to have trouble getting stuff shipped up there from ARB, one of us local Seattle people can help. Let me know and I'll see what we can do.

Good Luck.

Edit: It turns out that I can't scan to pdf here at home. I can scan it to pdf at work on Monday, if that will be soon enough for you. Otherwise, the file will be enormous.

He isn't gay either

Awesome link. Thanks!

Can the stock c clips be used or are different ones needed?

Thanks! I had found the exploded parts diagram previously. A manual would be most helpful. I'm gonna go through the links provided in the above replies so maybe the info is lurking in there... I've sent off an email to Kurt so hopefully will know if he can source the parts for me, otherwise I'll probably take you up on your offer.

I cancelled Orange's date with my welder buddy this morning. He was going to take care of the second last hurdle I need to jump through before taking her in for the out of province. Having this locker issue come up was greatly unanticipated and really sucks because I'm so close to getting her back on the road. What a piss off!. At least I'm learning lots about stuff I never really had an interest in before so I guess that counts for something. I appreciate the help!! :)

There are a few C-Clips included with every locker, they vary in thickness in order to provide the proper clearances in the diff housing.
There is a formula in the ARB install manual on how to figure it out.

to get that pinion shaft out you dont need the arb tool. I think I used a really long 17mm machine screw, slide it in, turn it and it should slide right out. The pinon shaft is extremely tight. I used some gentle tapping to get it out with a rod and a mini sledge. Same with getting it back in which was even harder.

Ok, I can wait. Kroll may also have an extra copy. He's checking into that.

I did find a way to convert the scanned Word files into pdf, but they're still huge after conversion. For instance, a 1 meg file converts down to about 800k. Most of the 36 pages are 2-3 meg as Word documents. Anybody know a way to shrink them further?

It might make more sense to print and mail them. Or you could just have some parts shipped to Mark and show up a day early. :D

So now that I'm working under the assumption that the locker is not an RD124, rather an RD08, here are some parts that I've collected for the 124. Are any of these interchangeable with the 08?

K - as promised, here are the reference photos (and no, the last picture isn't blurry... you've just been drinking too much :p).

This is the diff as it sits... along with close ups of the driveshaft end and pinion flange. I'm operating under the assumption that I'll run into issues bolting those two up because at first glance they seem like the holes are off a bit, but I'll know more tonight/this weekend and looking at the pattern on the flange it looks like they should line up but I'm not holding my breath. Alternatively, I have the flange on the diff I just took out that might be able to be swapped in (nothing like lifting diffs to build muscle :princess:).

Is one of those lines a breather? If so, is it needed if I've got an axle breather in the stock location with lines run up to the engine bay?

I'm tempted to just stick this sucker in the front axle and upgrade my birfs at this point.

Everything in the picture should work for the RD08...if you stuff it in the front, the C-Clips aren't required of course.

Here's a link to a RD08...I don't know how you found that it is an RD08, since it is not listed anywhere on the ARB site. I believe it must be an older ARB product.
Here is the install manual exactly for your RD08!

edit:
The second hole does appear to be a breather hole. I would just plug it and leave it. No need to overkill with more breathers.

Boo yeah! That's the link I need! :bounce: You never cease to amaze, my friend.

Through the course of this "project" :bang: :bang: :bang: I've learned that the RD 08 was replaced by the RD 124 which has since been replaced with the RD 153.

My favourite Cruiser part supplier Kurt (Cruiser Outfitters) (great front axle rebuild kits, BTW) clued me into the predecessor of the 124. He knows his stuff.... AND he's got the parts I need! Even after I was told that ARB OZ didn't even have all of them in stock and that it'd take 4 weeks or longer to get them in. I'm finally getting somewhere.

The countdown to being ready for the OOP is on. :steer:

Hmm good to know that the RD 153 is the new locker on the block.
Well your welcome !
Now just to convince the :princess: to come up north to see that locker in action this June. I will need to devise a plan...and scrape up money.
So the BC fitness test will be when ???
Did ou notice my wiring labels in the manual I sent up? They work for a 12V set up...don't know if all the lights will work for a 24V system.

Last Mother's Day (AKA Mudder's Day here in FSJ) I set a goal to have Orange back and running in a year.... inspection might be this week but realistically I may miss my goal by a few days as I have a few misc. things to take care of (got sidetracked with some fun projects such as a door table and drawers).

I did notice the wiring diagram.... I'll let you know if it works for a 24V system. :) My compressor is on its way. Got a hell of a deal on a brand new one. :bounce:

Hope the scraping is going well.
