After getting some great ideas from IH8MUD, I decided to put together a drawer system. I want to thank Zane for his excellent example - I borrowed heavily from his system.

Very nice! Can you post a link to Zane's thread with more details? Also what rails did you use? I'm going to be tackling a similar project this spring.

I wanted the drawers to be as long as possible so I could fit fly rod tubes. I had to mail order 34" Drawer slides from Rockler Woodworking - the drawers are 39 1/2" long. I made a trap door on the left to allow additional storage and access to the jack. The other side has an access door attached by magnets.

Checking out the Rockler Woodworking web site, I'm liking the looks of the Accuride Heavy Duty Full-Extension Slides (Series 9301). They are of course the most expensive, but can carry some serious weight (upwards of 500lbs).

The Accurides are really pricey. Rockler has a product called "Topslide", 34" rated at 220 pounds for $69.99 for the pair. By the way, you really need to make your drawer the exact width required by the slide. The tolerances are very close.

I did see the Topslide rails rated at 220lbs. That would probably be sufficient, are those the ones you used?

Thanks for the tips on the drawers!

While on the topic of drawers, does anyone have a source for cool heavy duty latch/locks for the drawers? I've seen some cool ones on aftermarket drawers that have a pull handle that doubles as the unlatch for the drawer to open. A lock is a bonus, but not a deal breaker.

Yes, I used the Topslide. I think that they are more than adequate and less than half the price of Accuride.

Have you filled up your drawers with a significant weight yet? How was the open and close action?

I like this to a low quality vs. high quality tool cabinet. The cheap ones (Craftsman, etc) when you load up the drawers with tools they do not slide easily. Then you try the high quality tool cabinet (MAC, Snap-On, etc) and you can't tell the difference whether or not the drawer is full or empty when opening it. The latter is the experience I want with my 100 drawer system.

Nice drawers! What is everyone doing about a slide lock? I know there are slides out there with integral hold open locking mechanisms but they are pretty expensive. It sucks to be nose down and trying to hold the drawer open while you get what you need out of the drawer. Ditto, but less of a PITA when the rear is down.

I have the drawers loaded with fishing tackle and some recovery equipment. They work flawlessly. I have no doubt that the Accuride product is better, but probably not necessary unless you are using your drawers for very heavy equipment.

Allegis Corp is another great place for latches, locks, handles, etc. of all kind.

They seem to carry what MMC doesn't and visa versa. And thanks 24HOURSOFNEVADA for turning me on to Allegis!

Great work on that system. The wood looks sharp.

When I was building my drawer system, I found a decent selection of discounted paddle and other latches on Amazon and ebay. At that time, some marine part suppliers had put up overstock at reduced prices. Southco latches are usually pricey, but I saw some good deals to be had. Allegis looks like a great source.

I used 150lb 24" sliders from Lowe's for a single drawer system, and they work fine. Very easy to open and close. I can see how higher capacity might be a good thing for a longer opening extension. I put a sub box in the front so my drawer is shorter than most.
