Just picked up a 13 4runner limited . I had an 07 FJ before with the same motor (almost) and this runner has a louder engine , it also has a magna flow exhaust , but this 4runner engine almost sounds like it has a “supercharger” some forums have said it’s a idler pulley , some have said it’s normal noise on some 4Runners/1gr-Fe motors. Haven’t pulled the belt off to see if it a pulley yet. First time owning a 4runner.

The 1GR-FE is a noisy engine. I would not say it sounds like a supercharged one though. Without knowing more about your truck it's hard to say for certain. Does yours have a aftermarket supercharger on it by chance? There is one out there from Magnusson.

2013 117k miles , no it’s not supercharged although I wish it was lol! But there’s a very audible “whine”
It’s not the power steering pump. Happens at PRND , coasting , or stopped , pulled off the belt already , no accessory idler pulleys-ruled that out , starting to think it’s something internal, but does anyone else’s 1GR sound like that?

Pulled the belt off and ran it momentarily and ruled out anything that’s spin by drive belt

Mine makes a similar sound but I had AFE intake installed 5 years ago, I remember it sounded quieter than now, it could be something related with the exhaust pipe or it could be a catalyst problem, maybe it is not funneling exhaust gases as much creating more pressure on the exhaust manifold.

Those are my theories but I could be wrong.
