Hi, all. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Recent changes are forcing me to move out of my 2013 JKU Rubicon into something bigger. I've always been a huge Land Cruiser fan and I've come across what I think might be a rare opportunity to pick up a 2001 with what appears to be a factory installed TRD supercharger with custom exhaust. They're asking $15k. It has ~160k miles. Timing belt was replaced at ~90k miles. It's in really good shape for the age and miles. Straight body; no concerning rust; paint is in great shape; etc. The previous owner had just recently spent about $3k replacing all the leather so that's in near excellent condition. It has a pretty decent aftermarket Pioneer touchscreen stereo with Nav, and AC/Heat and all electronics appears to work. It's a Toyota so the higher miles don't concern me (I put 350k miles on my '91 4Runner before selling it a kid down the street and he's still driving it 7yrs later) but I'm not extremely familiar with superchargers so I'm not exactly sure what to look for.
I did take it for a quick spin around the block and it felt and sounded great!
I do plan on taking it to the nearest Toyota dealer to have it checked out before I make any decisions but is there anything I should be looking/listening for that would tell me up front whether it's in good shape?

I read through the 'Hundy TRD Supercharger Newbie Guide' but that seems to cover installing superchargers, not purchasing a LC with one already installed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of goodies, no rust, new seats, desired supercharger, clean body - Have the dealer pull up a service history to see if it is half decent and of course check all the standard items add such as cv's, tranny, transfer case, brakes, bearings, ball joints, etc. If good sounds like a potential gem you should jump on quick. Best of luck!

Thanks folks. I definitely think it's a fair price but I still have my concerns... I noticed that the serpentine belt wasn't sitting correctly on the AC pulley and I wanted the dealer to have it checked out. It now appears the SC pulley is slightly out of alignment so they're taking it to Toyota service to see if it can be corrected. The dealer speculated the SC pulley might have been replaced and wasn't properly realigned...

Does that sound feasible? Should I be concerned?

$15,000 is pretty high for a 2001 with $160K miles. You are essentially paying for the supercharger. Without the SC the price should be around $11-$12K.

I sold my well maintained 2003 (no SC) with 190K miles for $12,500. The 2003 has the updated interior where the 2001 still has the older interior design).

X2, That is high priced, I picked up my 98 LX with 56,900 miles in great shape for $14k!

Traskew, If you're not missing a digit in your odo at purchase you did very well,... or the LX's aren't priced like the Toyota UZJ100.

To the OP, FWIW, I just saw a '99 with 190k on it for $10,900. Location does matter. It does seem a little high but all that matters is what it's worth to you.

I agree that it's bit high but that is just the asking price. And the brand new leather on all 3 rows is a factor as well. And it's TRD SUPERCHARGED!!! :D Those don't come up too often. It's also in great shape all around for the mileage.

As an update on the belt alignment issues. Looks like it was actually the AC compressor that was out of whack. The dealer is having it replaced by Toyota and that will hopefully be the end of it. Otherwise Toyota has given it a clean bill of health so I'm most likely going to be the proud owner of a bad ass hundy very soon!

I would consider it. Supercharger must be a nice upgrade over stock, I know I definitely would love more power. Also iirc it's a discontinued item because US made 2uz couldn't handle it, thus is kinda rare. Fresh leather and a non-NAV stereo would solidify it for me. Hopefully you can talk them down slightly but my guess is no based on them just dropping the $ on interior and knowing the combo of what they have is less common -- my only question would be WHY did they do the interior? At 170k only my steering wheel is worn.

.

Yep that was the true mileage verified by Carfax and the Lexus dealer in Naples where the previous owner had it serviced.

I picked up an 02' w/ SC'er last month - and coming out of a built 80 it feels damn quick....

Service history and a clean truck would seal the deal for me over a few dollars ( or more) the Sc'er is hard to find but yet is still serviced and it truly transforms the rig..... I looked at a really nice 06' LX and while it's similar in real power the delivery was different ..... and I like the idea of a bit of "tuning" on the motor..... I think with the DT headers and a good custom exhaust plus a tweaked UniChip the power will increase be enough to offset the 33's....

FYI on the belt - mine had a similar issue at purchase - the idler puiley was bad so redid that and the belts and it's all happy now....

keep us posted.

For Colorado, that price might seem a little high but not unreasonable depending on condition. The new leather interior might just be the result of sun damage. The only thing I would be wary about it that it was in an accident 2011. I would go over it with a fine tooth comb to be sure it was repaired correctly, maybe even pay to have it inspected.

HighOnPottery - it's funny that you'd be concerned about the new leather. I've looked at quite a few 100's lately throughout the entire range of years and it seems about 130k is the breaking point for the leather. I'm sure there are some exceptions but that's generally when I've seen it start to look really worn. The fact that the previous owner had it recently replaced is a huge win IMO.

BudgetLC - I see you found the listing. (I'm sure it wasn't that hard...) I am aware of the accident but I confirmed it was a minor, rear-end collision. Airbags were not deployed and no structural damage is reported. No salvage title. All the paint matches. Seams are all tight and straight. And as I mentioned in my original post, I did plan on taking it to a Toyota dealership to be inspected, but the dealer has taken it upon themselves to do it and will be providing copies of the paperwork.

I'm also surprised at all the comments on the price. LC's in the Denver area are very popular and selling at a premium. I've seen trashed-out stock 60's with upwards of 300k miles easily going for $10k and higher. '05-'07 100's with over 100k miles are going for $25-$30k and selling the same day they're listed. (I almost bought one until I discovered there's no way to upgrade/replace the factory stereo/navigation.)
I've narrowed my search to a '01/'02 or anything up to an '07 without factory navigation (Do those even exist???) because I want the ability to upgrade and not be stuck with a minimum 9yr old system that's reaching the end of its usability. I ruled out the '98-'2k because they don't have the latch/anchor system for kids seats.

Honestly, my only concern with this truck is the supercharger as I don't have a lot of experience with them and therefore not sure how to inspect one. The dealer I'm working with has gone out of their way to ensure everything is in good working order. Assuming that replacing the A/C compressor resolves the belt alignment issues and Toyota gives it a clean bill of health, I think ~$15k for a clean truck with new leather, a new Toyota branded and installed A/C compressor, a nice aftermarket stereo with nav, and a Toyota installed TRD supercharger is more than a fair price. (Although I'll still haggle like hell if and when the times comes to close the deal!!! :D )

Search for the trd supercharger install pdf. Read the part towards the end about belt alignment/idler pulley spacer. Nothing is prob wrong with the compressor but I dont have my eyes on it...

It's a local vehicle. The owner traded it in on a 2004 with less miles.

The seller (dealer) is a good, fair and honest guy. Tell Steve that Stan sent you and you expect to be treated as such.

In case anyone is interested, this truck is still available. Replacing the AC compressor did not resolve the belt issues. Still out of alignment and slipping off the pulley. It's becoming a little more work than I'm willing to get into for my initiation into the Land Cruiser realm. PM me if you have any questions about it.

Did you see my post above? Try that or point them in the direction.
