I am going to rebuild my 12ht and i was wondering where to get a very good quality rebuild kit because a friend of mine owns a large engine rebuilding place and he says that after market rebuild kits are crap and are no where near as good as genuine and that the parts arent precise and the seals crack within a few months so where can i buy high quality parts in australia for my 12HT and what have others used and what were the outcomes?

I am not in Oz, but I used Engines Australia and were happy with results and quality. From those that had done it before, I used everything in the kit but replaced all the seals with Genuine Toyota.

Cheers,

Sean

I went through my Toyota dealer. If you pick them up, no shipping costs, etc.

Takes a little tile to figure out the part numbers. I used Toyodiy.com and my engine manual to sort that out.

The only OEM seal I would bother using is the rear mains. All the others worked fine for me on my 1HZ rebuild.
I used the OEM rear mains seal on the advice of my mechanic

If anyone else has the kits they would be the same as the ones coming out of Australia, Aus has more 12HT's than anyone else, also get the right pistons and make sure you do the head correctly.

You get only one really good rebuild from a 12ht head so do it correctly as they are hard to get and check the cam.

If your rebuild a 12HT do it properly as they are nearly 30 years old.

Engines Aust have good kits, don't think you will find a bad word against them, its not a bad kit that is the problem, its a bad rebuild?

... also the kits from Engines Australia use Japanese parts....

I'd be surprised if that was true.... Most likely Taiwan for most parts IMO....

(But using manufacturers in Taiwan doesn't raise any alarm bells for me about Engine Australia's quality standards.)

(Except "head gasket" is something I'd go OEM-Toyota on.)

Here's a quote from another forum, member ordered a kit from Australia.

"I just helped a touareg friend rebuild his 12HT, with a kit from down under. Quite affordable I thought, 1295 AUD including con rods, pistons, rings, all bearings, gaskets. For once shipping was reasonable, usually kills any dealing with Oz.
I was happy when it arrived to find all Japanese parts, steel reinforced pistons,"

Would just ask who ever you buy the kit from about the parts list?

I know the NDC plain bearings in my Engine-Australia-sourced B-engine kit are Japanese..

But I suspect much of what they apply their "Diesel Power Parts" brand to is not.

They neglect to provide any country of origin labelling on their Diesel-Power-Parts components (which include liners, precombustion chambers, gaskets, seals, etc etc)...

Well that maybe the case but I have not heard to many bad reports against Engine Aus. I have a friend who works for a national engine rebuild company, will ask him on Monday his thoughts on which products they use?

Buying the kit is one thing, it's whom puts it all together is another? if you get my point. The prep work is very important as is using aviation glue on gaskets and having clean surfaces etc.

Have seen here members having engine parts (blocks & heads) not machined correctly or tested & x-rayed for cracks etc and only having the company say you did not put together correctly that's why it failed.

You can rebuild a 30 year old engine but at the end of the day it's still a 30 years old engine, you know a really good engine rebuild of a 12Ht is at least a $6,500 to $10,000, depending how far you want to go?

My 12ht has just had its 5000km service since being rebuilt it cost about $7000 for the full rebuild on it

Engine Australia parts are largely sourced from Taiwan. The guy who owns EA is an automotive engineer and he has Taiwanese companies make the parts to his specs. In an email to me they guarantee the parts to be equal or better than OEM.
Technology has moved on a bit since 1985 and some call Taiwan "the new Japan" because of their commitment to quality and having one of the highest educational standards in the world.
I always jump at the chance to buy Taiwanese tools and parts because they are top notch for half the price of Japanese items.

Yeah that's a nice story and I really want to believe it but Taiwan is the new Japan as India and Korea and Malaysia are the new Japan.

I'm not old school and I'm all about thinking global but the only country that is the new Japan is Japan and the only thing better than Japanese components is German components (generally speaking).

Japanese and German quality reputation is largely contributed to the six sigma continuous improvement programs using statistical analysis to eliminate defects, the Taiwanese & Koreans subscribe to the modern "fit for purpose" quality standard which puts the user in charge of what they perceive is quality hence why we see a lot of 7 year warranty cars these days as this is almost precisely their expected life span before things are built to go expensively wrong. It's also why a lot of consumer law has changed to guarantee a product for the "life" if it's intended purpose (read you get what you pay for).

Any way that's my 2c worth on quality, at least we all know there is nothing better quality than a 60 series!

Also being a non-Australian, I have also searched for alternates to EA as the shipping cost kills me, and, I am a little otherwise and don’t really like being pushed into a corner.
I have asked around and looked and found a few alternates and would appreciate some comments, no need to punt EA, we all know they are good, but as mentioned there are alternates, but admittedly probably no “one stop shop” as EA definitely is.

Check out my two threads on the above.

Gasket set-Victor Reinz
Big ends-ACL
Mains- TAIHO
Pistons-ARCO See my thread.
Does anyone have any more useful info on ARCO? Taiwan made piston alfin inserts seem to have been around. Is this possibly EA’s source?
Liners- A good diesel machine shop should have access to liner stock and, if given the pistons, should be able to sort you out.
Valves- and seats ??? Help me here please.
OEM- limited and expensive but some parts available.
Be good to pool some info.

I have been buying Taiwanese tools and parts for over 30 years. Im still using the tools and the parts have never let me down. Japanese companies have many of their parts made there , like Honda did with SYM.
