Fellow knights,

With a heavy heart and after much deliberation I have decided to pass my noble steed to a more worthy rider.

Some of you know that I purchased my '76 FJ55 almost two years ago from Casey Campbell, who had purchased it not too long before that from Todd Kaderabek. In the 20 months or so that I've owned the truck, I've taken her wheeling about 5 times. Wheeling just isn't a big part of my life any more. I own three other Land Cruisers, which fulfill the daily driver, expedition/camping/fishing, and grunt firewood hauler roles, so the Pig sits in waiting as the dedicated "just for fun" trail rig. I love the truck but I'm not doing it justice and out of respect for the beast I think I should pass it on. It doesn't deserve to sit rusting in my yard.

Some technical details:

1976 FJ55

~170K miles (168,7xx on odo)
17K on rebuilt 2F (Toyota dealer, have receipts) RUNS LIKE A TOP!
6K on rebuilt transmission, rebuilt transfer case (with 2Low added), new clutch and new brakes.
Custom "low SOA" by Lance Williams with custom springs and shaved perches.
Custom front and rear bumpers by Lance Willliams.
Custom sliders welded in place of the rockers by Lance Williams
Anti-wrap bar
Minitruck power steering

Brand new OEM water pump, August '06

RS9000 shocks
Rear Powertrax No Slip automatic locker
4 35x12.5x15 MTR's with at least 75% tread
1 SSR spare
5 10"x15" (2.5" backspace) Rock Crawler wheels

Warn 8274-50
AM/FM/Cassette with 4 speakers
CB
No emissions

about 300 miles on:
- FJ60 birfs and knuckles
- 4Runner brake calipers
- Marlin Hi Steer with FJ80 TRE's and custom drag link and tie rod

The bad:

Body:

- Holes in driver's floor, DS rear passenger door jamb, couple other places. Wheel well edges are pretty ragged. Rear quarters have a lot of bondo. Bits of surface rust all around. Holes in roof plugged with some kind of gooey caulk stuff. This is a trail rig body, lots of crooked panels, etc.
- Front bench seat completely worn out. I've purchased an Iron Pig Off Road front seat bracket and bucket seats and a Tuffy center console. These go with the truck if you want them. If not, I'll sell them separately..

Mechanical:
- the front diff is making a bad noise when decelerating in 4WD. It started right after the front axle rebuild, and I think it didn't make noise before that only because one of the hubs was missing a part so I was really in three wheel drive... I have no idea what is wrong but this is pretty much the only thing that worries me about the truck. UPDATE: AS OF MID AUGUST THE FRONT DIFF IS NO LONGER MAKING BAD NOISES AND AS FAR AS I CAN TELL IS WORKING FINE. I HAVE NOT OPENED IT TO INSPECT IT.

I'm not lookiog to make money, just hoping to pass the Pig on to a worthy knight. I'm asking $5000, which is pretty firm, and I'm losing money at that price. We can work out transportation. The truck is in Marquette, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula, near Lake Superior...

How's Todd's shoulder and back? Maybe he should sell his 80 back to JR and buy his Piggy back from Yooper...

...then the world will be back to 2003 "normal".

Bump...almost bought it from Todd the first time.

Titanium Man is in tip-top shape. :D

Perhaps you'd rather I sold my 80 directly back to you so we don't have to bother Jim.

I think my 55 days are over. I'll never forget Lance Williams' reaction the first time he drove this beast. There were lots of expletives, all of which added up to, "this 2F is strong!"

It's a good truck. A little rough around the edges as Sean says but man will it wheel.

Good luck with it, Sean.

Duct tape is some durable stuff! When I took the Ford truck mirrors off and installed the factory mirrors (big improvement) I plugged the holes left by the oversized mirrors with duct tape, temporary fix. I see it's still there. Or is that replacement duct tape?

You have synthetic cable on that winch, right? Casey put it on as I recall.

I miss that truck.

Duct Tape!!

 :flipoff2: :D

I didn't know that you did that. That's hilarious (I know your FJ62 duct tape history). No, I haven't messed with the mirrors at all and they are quite secure, and the duct tape is TJK original!

Yeah, the synthetic cable rocks. I've used the winch more often for pulling logs our of the woods or pulling up stumps then while wheeling.

I know I'm gonna miss it too. I drove it to work today, smiling the whole way, crying a little bit inside...

if only it weren't sprung over

i'd seriously consider bringing it back to the hills of the ole north state.....just too much truck for me...not to mention the fact that I'm a lifetime pig tire kicker.

It's just the right amount of sprung over....

:D

(Haven't seen your 62 around town in a while. Still have it?)

still around

moved to the dark city (Black Mountain) since they relocated our office to Swannanowhere (went with the low bid district, man I miss walking around downtown at lunch). Wife recently dented the crap out of the back rear quarter with a Volvo side mirror of all weapons. We carpool to work and all so the 62 is getting a lot of garage action. Would like a 55 but the typical suspects (i.e., mountain bike, daycare, second adoption perhaps etc.) are the reality checkers.
I'll say bump to keep the chat police at bay.

Yooper,
How does it do on the old highway, I am seriously considering it but would need to get it home to SLC and thats a hell of a long drive, What gearing are the axles??
Dave

Stock gearing, which I think is either 4.10:1 OR 4.11:1

It does fine on the highway. The engine is STRONG, definitely the strongest 2F I've encountered. The day I bought it I drove it home 375 miles with no problems, averaged 65mph. It does feel a bit squirrelly over 75mph, but it doesn't strain it to go that fast by any means.

It's LOUD though on 35's and the front seat is kinda like sitting in a hammock. I was exhausted after that drive, but my face hurt from smiling too! Driving it cross country is certainly doable, but I'd take my time, keep the driving hours per day short, and wear hearing protection.

Also no A/C of course. If I can get the rear window to work that helps a lot. There is this HUGE swirl of air that goes through if you drive with the rear window down on the highway...

I drove it 700 plus miles when I bought it to get it home. Of course if was stock then....

a little too much rust for that much of a drive, think I will wait till one shows up closer.

I was gonna say. If I lived in the west I wouldn't shop east of Colorado for any vehicle, but especially not a 30 year old one that's especially prone to rust. Aren't I a great salesman?

If I had followed that line of advice I/you/Casey would have never owned this Cruiser. It came from the Spokane, Washington, area. In general I agree though.

You're the 5th owner, by the way. Purchased in Boise, Idaho, in 1976. Belonged to a guy in eastern Idaho who (literally) cruised timber with it. He's the one who disconnected the rear window switch at the gate (you can put any key in there and roll it down, he didn't want his equipment stolen). He owned it for something like 20 years. It went from there to outside of Spokane to be a daily driver, which it was for 5+/- years. When that guy moved to Buffalo, NY, he decided he needed a more user friendly daily driver and sold it to me. He towed it behind a U-Haul truck to Toledo, Ohio, where we unloaded it during a tornado. I drove it back to Asheville from there and began the monsterification process.

You know the rest....
