Here's the rear step and hitch on my 1971. Things have a bit of surface rust and the paint is fading but it's original dealer installed. The hitch looks different than the one pictured earlier in this thread but Toyota may have changed things over the years.
I have a 1971 FJ40 with the original 3-speed column gear shift. The steering and gear shift columns run through the dash noticeably on the left side of the cut-out. The gear shift and steering work well but it looks odd to see the columns not centered in the cut-out. It's more off-center...
On the primer color, I have a 1971 FJ40 with the original Spring Green paint. I've had this FJ40 since 1972, almost since it was new. The primer color is a light blue beneath the Spring Green Green paint.
My experience is that if your FJ40 has the rivet type rims used on drum brakes then you need tubes. Without tubes the air apparently leaks out through the rivet holes in the rim. At least that was the problem I had when a shop tried to install new tires on my rims with out tubes. I ended up...
Picture of new bezel
Here is a picture of a new light tan bezel from another thread. I saved the picture several months back but I can't find the thread again. This bezel is the same color as the one in your first post. I called it light tan but maybe light beige is a better description. I...
I have a 1/71 build FJ40 that still has the original factory Spring Green paint and original light tan bezel and fiberglass top. I've had this FJ40 since 1972 when it was almost new. The top and bezel should match and they are definitely a light tan color since new.
Also, this topic has come...
Sorry, I'll unshut up briefly based on the last thread I just saw. I was thinking about an H55 and was going to ask them Monday what it would take to do it and if they could make it work for me and my legs. I'd like to keep the vaccum shift where it is but I thought the gear shift would have...
Here's my thoughts:
1) True. But the second opinion I got from another restoration shop is also compelling and put me over the edge. But I can’t say I haven’t gone back and forth on this today and I will probably do so tomorrow.
2) My understanding from the restoration shop is...
The shop told me my FJ40 was in the top few percent of all FJ40's because of it's original condition. That's all I've got. Maybe it's not true, it sure surprised me.
In terms of the column shift, I don't recall if I ever sat in a late year FJ40 but I for sure sat in a new 1972 model. I...
Ripped off, well after all the input on this Forum if this is a rip-off I'm doing it to myself. I can't say I wasn't warned.
From what I was told by the shop, and yes I'm aware they could be spinning me, they were surprised with the condition of my FJ40 when they saw it. Original paint...
Yes, it's a very bad investment, even more so since it isn't a mid-70's or later model. The shop told me it's worth about $8k to $10K as it sits now. With $25k to $30k additional invested I'll get about $1 in value for every $3 spent and I'll have a $20k LandCruiser at the end of it all...
Hmm, anal, that's probaby a kinder description than you think.
I did know about the valves beforehand. This thread is getting long but if you read eariler the suspected burned valves were part of the reason I stopped driving the FJ40 27 years ago.
I have consulted with another...
So then I guess it was the transmission that leaked and messed up the clutch. That's one more leak from 27 years ago, not exactly good news.
Just so many problems none of which got better sitting for so long.
I appreciate that I've heard from people who are much more experienced and...
I'm pretty sure at least one valve is burned and I told the shop I thought it had burned valves before they started their work. Frankly, I thought more than one would be burned and I was surprised when the compression in only one cylinder was low. Part of the reason I stopped driving it 27...
I'd like to clarify, the result of a leak down test and wet compression test will not change the shop's recommendation to rebuild the engine. The engine has been inactive for 27 years and combined with the overall age of 42 years and that's the main reason to recommend a rebuild. One the other...
