My problem is that isn't the case. Toyota varies the payload as much as 50% on the 4Runner within the same model generation with no changes. They also changed tow ratings without any changes mid generation. It's possible that Toyota will change...
Insofar as it's useful to understand payload, which is gvwr less curb weight, it's also useful to understand how gvwr is calculated (and what it, and therefore also payload, actually mean).
I too assume that's true, but I haven't yet researched whether there is separate regulatory guidance for cargo ratings. That could be buried somewhere in definitions.
I’ll offer a theory on the GX having an abnormally high payload for a Toyota. They actually are reflecting the combination of people and tongue load for towing and federal compliance.
9,000lb towing x 8% tongue load = 720lb.
5 pax x 150lb per =...
It's a strange rule because it still leaves manufacturers rated cargo to be anything they decide that means. Toyota could say that means 10 lb or 10 million pounds. Without any objective standard like the SAE tow rating - I don't know how you...
In the U.S., federal regulations at 49 CFR 567.4(g)(3) require GVWR be calculated assuming:
150 lbs per passenger seat, and
manufacturer's rated cargo load, and
unloaded vehicle weight (curb weight)
49 CFR 567.4(h) provides for multiple GVWRs...
in Australia they can legally increase the GVWR of the vehicle in several manners, one would be rerating the truck to combined axle ratings GAWR.
that would put the LC250 @ 7640lbs, or 805 lbs more. an indicator what matters the most for payload...
I posted in the LC vs GX comparo thread. I stopped by a Lexus dealership today on teh way back home from an MD App.
1. The payload read 1380 minus the 8 lbs yellow sticker, then 1372 lbs.
2. It was a premium model.
3. Deposit is $2500...
Amazing the complex explanation that load capacity = occupants + cargo...
And that they are starting off with the incorrect load capacity of 1235 lbs for a 200 series to start off with.
200 series GVWR - Curb Weight ~ 1600 lbs, either for the...
Here's the example given from the a 200 series owners manual. This implies that the given 1235lb payload does not include passengers or cargo.
I would agree that how Toyota does the math between stated total load capacity, GVWR and GAWR is...
It's unclear how the door jamb weight limits are calculated.
I defer to GVWR - curb weight to calculate payload, but Toyota's website and tech specs still conflict on those values.
It is indeed odd what Toyota is putting on the door stickers.
Payload should be GVWR - Curb Weight (= car + fuel). I have checked many sources and they all point to that.
Those calculations from available curb and GVWR weights do not equate to...
I use all of the payload on my 80 regularly. And for the record I checked my wife’s outback’s door jam which also indicated 900lbs. Seems to be Subaru’s target number.
I am confused by the website as well. You could go to a dealer and place a deposit, which is a contract based in part on the data on their website. Hard to rationalize how they can put incorrect data there. To reinforce the 1100lb theory, here...
I am not sure fully understand why so angry with this. My LC200 is 1273 lbs after the yellow sticker. That's only 173 lbs difference. Or 13.5%.
Is it really THAT bad ?
Not intended to flame but honestly asking. 🙏🏿🫂
It depends on one’s use case. For me, it’s really not workable. For others, it totally is. Land Cruisers for a long time were the only vehicles available in the US market small and nimble enough to go places jeeps do but with truck-like payloads...
