Looks like the ghost of Cruisers past!

Either the bolts were a tick too long or the lock washers were missing--probably got mixed up during a previous rebuild--and they bottomed out in the housing and snapped when wrenching them in. Get the dual seal housing--good investment--and...

Patience, Grasshopper, you have just begun the journey. Add the green tea and see what's needed. At least it doesn't sound catastrophic.

Pics? I would be interested depending on that parts they are. Thanks for offering.

I'm embarrassed to admit it now but many, many years ago I actually had to do the same thing as you on my 1970 and I made a rollbar-like hoop out of pvc conduit fitted to the b-piller's holes to support the bikini top. Obviously it's not crash...

@GA Architect - Yup, took the rear DS off yesterday afternoon, and the noise went completely away, and it makes sense because as I eyeballed the angle of the pinion, it was not parallel to the transfer case. Now with that resolved, I’m about to...

Beautiful, how about some interior and under hood pics, too?

Just a theory here: your tach is somehow doubling the number?
    • Paul_A
Your numbers just don't work unless you are in low range. I run a SBC and at 1:1 top gear and a 4.10 rear you'll be at 2400-2500rpm at 55mph.

Seat mods have large safety implications to be taken into account. Have you considered adding plates on the underside of the floor to run the bolts thru? Those bolts with washes will rip right thru the sheet metal floor if there is a solid hit...

There he was ready to charge, I knew I had to keep cool....remember squeeze don't jerk the trigger. He came at me in a flash, the rifle roared and he lay there dead at my feet, in a heartbeat it was all over. Looking now over my fireplace mantel...

Paul_A replied to the thread Sloppy steering questions.
Not sure if this helps you, but this is an issue that others might need to be aware of. On my GM power steering set up the tie rod is tight left to right, but the drag link from the pitman arm to the tie rod twists a bit front to back when going...

No, no and no, not from an FJ40.

Paul_A replied to the thread Birfield stuck in ball housing.
I would be very leery of heating anything without risking warping the housing, changing the temper, etc. The amount of heat required might have to be very excessive. A slide hammer would be a good investment for lots of uses.

I think 45Dougal's pic has the threads going the opposite way--lefty tighty. Maybe I'm backwards.

Very informative, dfarley4504--quick and accurate. Thanks.

Well, my .02 is: 1. You get it all in one package, just be sure it fits (do your home work!) 2. you got to pick it up so you will see it in person before you write the check, and 3. I don't see anyone else showering you with more options...

It sounds like you are in danger of over thinking it. Unless you have significant backlash in the ring to pinion or spider gears, I highly doubt that you have an issue. The remaining grey goop will dilute in the new gear oil. If it ain't...

I run both, the electric on a toggle switch on the dash. When I go to start I flip on the electric pump and wait for the gas to get up to the carb--the sound will tell you it's up to pressure--and then I switch it off and crank the engine and it...

I drilled holes in my channel to match the existing threaded holes from the hardtop and it worked fine. The windshield frame does arch a tiny bit so you might need 4 hands to bend the channel. It ain't much. I did have to locate and drill the...
