Has anyone mounted an Awning to their roof rack? I am thinking of building one of these racks that a lot of the 80 series guys are making (like this https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=132645 but full length) and one of the primary things I want is a retractable awning…. Maybe something like this http://awningoutpost.com/index.jsp?currentPage=hierarchy/set.jsp&groupId=7&categoryId=16&setId=58

Has anyone looked into this? Hoping I could find one pretty close to the length of a full length rack and make it work some how… I think it would be pretty kick ass on trail runs or tailgating to be able to throw it out, pull out the cooler and some lawn chairs to have an insta-chill

Any input is appreciated….

Not a direct answer...but we have a Fiamma awning on our AT Horizon trailer. It is a slick design that is compact and allows integral storage of the support legs and quick set-up and pack-up. Like anything that is well designed and constructed they are probably not cheap...

It would be relatively easy to mount one (they are available in many different lengths and widths plus attachable, optional, privacy/screen enclosures) to even a factory LC roof rack...and even easier mounting to an aftermarket roof rack. Just an FYI.

The type of awning in the link sticks way out when retracted. I had one on my RV.
The Shadyboy might be a better option. They sell to the VW van market but no reason your toyota would reject the transplant.

I have been looking at different awning designs, but most are too bulky to hang off the side of a rack (at least where I go) without accidently leaving it on the trail at some point

It sure would be nice though, to have something that can be quickly set-up and is fairly self-contained ( I.E. no extra poles or tension lines are needed) .

Here are a few others that I have seen..

Note the small "base" that is actually needed to attach it to the vehicle and store it...

Also,
This company makes a large variety (but what about U.S. availability?)

Good luck !

You can get the Fiamma's from Adventure Trailer if nowhere else. We love the one we have...although if you are venturing off-road into heavy tree/branch cover it might be susceptible to damage if you smack it with a big enough branch...even though it is built really well; but then again most any awning would be susceptible to damage when used in that manner.

There is at least one other thread in Outfitting regarding awnings...with some good ideas if I remember correctly...

Hannibal's racks and awnings

Hannibal makes a full-length FJ80 rack and awnings for it, and even drop-curtains for the awnings that turns them into dressing rooms/sleeping tents/"bathrooms."

Not cheap, but very cool: http://www.hannibalusa.com/toyota80.htm

Mike,

Next time you're in town let me know and I can introduce you to Jason over at TruckWerks. He can TIG and I'm down for checking out your idea for an awning.

x2 on checking out your final design (assuming they'll be for sale ;) )

I picked this up at Cabela's for $99: http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0019861521201a.shtml

Demo'd it once to make sure it would work. wouldn't leave it up in windstorm, but it'd work well otherwise. I like that it's removable so I can store it inside if needed, or clip to fence/trailer etc.

Phil,

I've thought of an idea similar to that for awhile. How does he fasten the poles when it's not in use? I was worried about adding yet one more rattle to my truck.

I've got one on the rack on one of my mini-trucks. I've got a 10 foot rack that covers the bed and cab. Handy for hauling steel when I'm using it for a parts runner and also handy for stuff that is to long to fit in the bed when I'm using it as a support truck for a group outing.

Anyway, I have an 8 foot by 8 foot roll out awning off of an older camper conversion van mounted on the passenger side of the rack. It stows in it's aluminum case and has fold out legs and support struts. Total weight is about 15 pounds I would guess.

Most of the guys I run with kinda laughed at first 'cause I tend to use this rig a little hard and it didn't fit the "Hardcore" image" But I use it on long trips a lot and it is seldom that we do a run that is not at least an overnighter. They quit laughing the first time I popped it up and sat in my chair eating supper while tthey pitched their tents in the rain. When I was done I sat my tent up under it without getting a drop of rain on it. ;)

I can have this unstowed and setup in about 3 minutes. I can set it up level with the outer edge at the saem height as the inboard side (about 7 feet), or I can lower it down close to the ground. This can be handy for keeping the rain off of a tent when there is a bit of wind blowing. When setting up for a full day or more, I can hang tarps from the frameing of the awning to make side walls too.

I really like having it. It can be a liability when you are manuvereing down a tigh trail with overhanging trees. I've whacked it a few times and the case shows it. But I can still make it close and the awning itself works perfectly even if the enclosure is a bit battered.
