Hi all,
Just bought the Madman EMS1 engine monitoring unit and thought it might be fun to share the process of installation with you, being no technician at all, so up front all tips and tricks will be welcome!:wrench:
I ordered along the custom 1HZ kit that includes EGT, Coolant Level, Temperature of Coolant, Pressure of Boost and Temperature of Engine oil (weld-on plug) and the Long Harness.
Let me share first two pictures of my car, the engine bay and the dashboard. I'm planning to direct the wires through the rubber opening on the passenger side of the fire wall. The monitoring device itself will be placed under the radio, the wires will be led through the ashtray.

To be continued.

Man I wish I had a 5spd and a 1HD. And LHD to boot--Very nice..

quite diferent your engine bay .. with your FT Jurgen .. there are 2 " vaccum " sensors over your turbo exhaust close to the firewall .. what they do .?

Being no mechanic, I don't know what they actually do, but I think they are part of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. I will attach some detailed pictures.
Ciao, Jurgen

Requires a bit of DIY but the madman works very nice. I still have to wire and install the last sensor (transmission temp)

I ended up ditching the supplied 'tube' for the coolant level as I used an adapter in the hose for the coolant temp which leaves no place for the madman supplied thingy. I made a little steel wire that clamps in the top hose connector for the coolant level, works well.

thanks Jurgen .. interesting .. first time that I saw it .. thans less stuff to fix, and mantain in my engine ..

Interesting but I'm a bit confused.. Interior pic up top is left-hand drive... lower pics are right hand drive... and different vehicle... ?

different mudder!

Yep, the first pictures are from my car, the 1995 LHD with the EGR system, the second set are pictures of Dutchie's car, who has already installed the Madman EMS kit in his RHD and was so kind to share them with us. :)

Don't worry... every now and then after filling up the car I still open the left hand door to find out the wheel and pedals are at the other side...

Have fun Jurgen with the set, I'm very happy with it !! I really recommend this thing to everyone !

Madman EMS1 installation items

I received the Madman EMS1 kit today by post. I quickly checked if it worked and it did (measuring voltage only of course, because nothing else was attached). I will add a picture. I think I have figured out the following:
- The coolant level item (6) will be placed in the middle of the (to be split in two) top hose of the radiator, as Dutchie has shown in a post above.
- The coolant temperature sender (1 or 2) will be placed in the adaptor (7) at the end of the radiator hose.
- The Madman EMS (9) unit will be placed in the midconsole just below the gear shifter. The wife don't want it in the center console and she is probably right (actually she thought the best spot would be in the cubby box...).

Now I need to discover where:
- to put the EGT probe (8). I know there are a lot of threads (and opinions) on where to install the probe. The manufacturer says in the exhaust manifold pre-turbo. AFAIK there is no spare port, so unfortunately I'll have to ask somebody to drill one for me. I know there is thread on this on the forum, but I can't find it right now.
- to install the boost pressure sender (5). I have no clue... It has screwthread on it and it fits in one of the adaptors (3 or 4). Page 97 of the 1HD-FT service manual states to put a turbocharger pressure gauge to the hose between the vacuum pipe and intake pipe (for checking purposes). But that looks to me as a rubber to rubber connection.
- to connect the oil temperature sender (1 or 2). I want to measure the tranny temp, so it probably will go somewhere under the car :D I'd rather not drill additional holes.

So far for now. Any help is appreciated, again.

Ciao, J.

These may help.

Yep, those were the threads I was referring to, thanks!
It confirms my thinking that unfortunately I'll need to drill for the EGT. For the tranny temperature sender I have to choose between the options, although I have a manual box, AFAIK I don't have an "idiot light" sender like in the automatic transfer box.

If you have a manual, you shouldn't need a temperature sender for the fluid.

I have same kit, althow havent installed it yet. Parts 3 and 4 are adapters for the temp sending units to thread into. One is designed to adapt to the auto trans pan drain hole and the other is to thread in place of your drain plug on your engine.

Pick up a Brass pipe"T" to thread into part 5 then get the apropriate sized hose barbs for the small boost lines so you can "tap inline" Make sure you ground the sender well as they read resistance to relay paramaters, so a bad ground means no proper readings for you!

Yep, that is what I'm finding out. I'll use the sender for engine oil temperature instead.
Thnx, J.

Okay, so that is the same place as being referred to in the service manual. I'll get the parts.
Keep you posted, thanks, guys, you are great.

I have an EMS1 kit to install as well, when I get an engine in, of course. I was thinking of hooking up the JDM reverse alarm (useless feature) to the speaker out of the unit. Do you think this would be possible? Easier to hear with music.....

Mmh, not sure what you want to do, but my version of the EMS1 does not have a speaker out. Unless you want to use the relay output, but that surpasses my technical skills (I know, that is easy).
