hi all, i am in the process of replacing my alternator on my 1991 land cruiser. had to take the smog pump above the alternator off for access to remove the alternator. should lock tight be used for the mounting bolts on either or both the alternator and or smog pump, nothing is mentioned in the fsm on this issue. if so any recommendations on "strength of" or brand to use. also any torque specs or recommendations on how tight these mounting bolts should be.

thanks:cheers:, cliff

My '97 FSM says 43 ft lbs for pivot bolt and 15 ft lbs for lock bolt on alternator. No locktite from the factory so I see no reason to use it.

I use red loctite on steel and blue on aluminum. But in all my years changing belts on these, those bolts have never been loose come changing time.

hello, forgot to put some closure on this thanks for the input on the lock tight issue. started out ordering an auto zone alternator when i went in to pick up and exchange my OEM core things did not look right on the auto zone core namely the location of the condenser (and lack of a new one provided) on the back side of the alternator, brought it back the next day got refund and headed over to the local Toyota dealership and ordered from them, price started out at over $500., after my local cruiser club discount some how the price ended up being $235, about $100 more than auto zone (lifetime guarantee) vs. yr. for the exact match Toyota replacement. the take out and install was pretty straightforward:banana::banana: job on my scale of inepitude ;p although my arms looked like they went 12 rounds in a paper bag with a mad cat.

:cheers:cliff
