I'm looking at replacing my battery. I want the most powerful AGM battery I can just drop in. After searching, I came with the Diehard P5 basically a P2 (group 65 930cca) with reversed terminals. I don't want a marine battery. Any other plug and play options?

Group 31 will fit in the OEM tray. Some models require small modifications as each company's battery dimensions will vary slightly. A Optima yellow or blue group 31 is a drop in no mods. A Diehard group 31 marine requires a slightly longer bar to secure it down. Those are the two I have personally. From memory I believe a Deka/31 needs a longer bar too.

Why, is there money burning a hole in your pocket?

Someone should really write a FAQ. It would answer your question, plus the next five you will have. Wait they did!!!! :bang:

Thanks, I just reread that thread. Lots of great info.
I want a large AGM because I frequently drain the battery down farther than recommended, I want a battery that can bounce back, and take a full charge over and over.
So it looks like if I don't want want to go with a 31M (I don't want a marine battery) then the group 65 is the ticket for me. You mentioned the Group 65 AGM from Autozone for about $160. But I don't think it has the reversed terminals like the P5.

After researching I had pretty much decided on the P5. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I overlooked

Yes. That it has a reserve capacity of only 100. What are you doing to draw it down? A 27f for $110 with a RC of 165 or a Duralast Group34r platinum agm with an RC of 120.

I fit a sears die hard platinum marine group 31 (http://www.sears.com/diehard-platin...p-02850131000P?prdNo=4&blockNo=4&blockType=G4) into my OEM tray without issue. Well it was a little heavy, but other than that, no issues.

For those winching/fridging or frequently draining your batteries down to less than 50% you should read the attached Lifeline link that Cary provided in the link.

In appendix C. theres a graph of the battery discharge vs cycles (life of battery) and how its significantly reduced if you drain your batt to less than 50%state of charge.

Lifeline recommends sizing the batts double your winching/draining needs so that battery life is preserved. The graph shows that its fairly dramatically reduced if you are taking it to 10%soc........5000 cycles down to less than 500.

For fridges you need to look at the 20 amp/hr rating (capacity) of the battery and factor in that a fridge will use avg 2amps hr/ 24hrs. and more in the sun since its cycling on and off and theres a "turn on" spike in amps. 50-60amp/hrs per day to be conservative and then to stay at or above the 50%SOC rate.....you would need to be looking for 100-120amp/ hr AGM to maintain the cycling advantages of an AGM.

Are you sure about the P5 I thought it had the same RC as the P2 (135) and 930 CCA.
Doesn't the grp. 65 have more CCAs than the 34 and the 27?
I'm not trying to argue, just trying to find the very best drop in battery I can buy. I appreciate all the feedback.
As for how I drain it down, It's usually playing the stereo all night, or headlights on with truck off.

After more research it looks like they do make the Duralast grp.65 with reversed terminals. I'm going to see if my local store stocks it

I am just curious... Why no marine battery? Are you trying to avoid a deep cycle battery?

I'm trying to stay away from the 31M for two reasons. If I have to warranty the thing, I don't want to have to lie and tell them it was in a boat, and while it will fit in the tray, the posts are in the middle of the battery, not the edge.

I'm not sure if it was a PO of my truck, or if my wires are stock, but my positive wire has all the fusible links 3 inches behind the terminal, so I would have to modify to fit the center posts on a group 31M

At the end of the day I should have remembered the golden rule about living in Hilo. Its not what you want, its what you can get. Autozone out of stock. Sears out of stock on the 65, the 27 and the 34m (Cary you were right the p5 is the 34M) I swear I knew more about they're batteries than the sales guy.
So then I'm thinking Walmart for the warranty, out of the 27, out of the 65.
I ended up just going to my local parts store for an Interstate 27

Aloha all

I told Sears mine was going in a Land Cruiser. They did not care. The OEM battery cables will reach if you snip a zip tie upstream on the + cable.

I completely understand that. There are places on the mainland with that problem too.

Same with me, they even gave me the friends and family discount

edit: I have replaced all my battery cables with longer, thicker cables.

I had to travel 3 hours and into another country to get my battery!

I would stick with the Wal-Mart battery if your living on the big island. Wal-Mart's return/exchange policy is easy. My uncle uses them on a solar power bank and never has problems with Wal-Mart.

The battery guys at sears can be hard to deal with on returns/exchanges. Plus heat kills the batteries there. However Wal-Mart changed their warranty on certain group size batteries so check that out. Wal-Mart sells the hybrid batteries also. I run the duralast hybrid and it works good.

BTW where is there a AutoZone in Hilo?

I appreciated this rigorous battery killing test done by IH8Mud members! Job well done! You can find full report from members a while back...hard to argue with facts they published show below: Odyssey battery came in first in 3 out of 5 and 2nd in the remaining tests (but note, since this test, the Sears die hard premium has been discontinued by sears in favor of the diehard gold series they said because of too many warranty returns).

Curious if members will advocate their favorite battery not tested here? I am looking for the best deep cycle battery money can buy for running all the electrical s#!* when engine is off. I.E. ARB Fridge, Stereo decks w/ 7 speakers, Charging (Ipad, Iphone, lap top computers) and other.

Odyssey PC-2150 series. AGM. Nothing better, and nothing bigger will fit. There are several different terminal configurations available.
