If you are handy, you can take the switch apart and fix it most of the time. Lots of little parts and springs. Good lighting, and a deep big box to work in. Only bend the tabs open enough to release the guts - they break off easily.
 
Russ, I just bought a 40 for parts. Coincidently I noticed it has a wiper intermittent switch wired in. I will post pics when time permits as an intermittent switch would be nice especially if its mass produced. Maybe its something that can contribute to your project.
 
Interesting, is it factory or aftermarket? The aftermarket stuff typically doesn't work on our wipers that switch on the ground side.

Here’s what I found on the donor truck. Seems like an in-line resistor. It was spliced in on the low speed side of the wiper.
