image.jpg image.jpg So when I bought this 40 last year it had the winch in the attached photos installed. It's not connected to anything and I don't think it works. What would your collective advice be in dealing with this? Try to have it rebuilt or just purchase new. If the latter, would I be able to simply buy a Warn winch and swap it out with this leaving everything else alone? Thanks in advance,

looks like an 8274. those are great winches and look great on 40s in my opinion. they can be bought for about $1500 rebuilt from my searches but apparently can be rebuilt easily for about $250. I have one waiting to be rebuilt so I don't have first hand advice yet but there are a few really good threads here about that winch. check in the recovery section too. you'll probably get more advice there too. I'd say tear it apart and rebuild it... or you could just give it to me!!

I think that's a Bellview winch, the predecessor of the Warn 8274.

Good winch, parts available. You could make it work if you want.

If you want a winch right now, get a Warn 8274. But that one is cool, and worthy of some effort, especially if it's year appropriate for your 40.

I agree with @Cruiserdrew , looks like the same one I have. I was told if the non-motor side (drivers side) had openings then that's a good hint that it's a bellview/bellvue.. Thanks @elkaholic !

I gave mine a touch of paint to freshen it up. Would love some new decals if anyone knows where to get?

Mine still pulls strong. I leave mine disconnected for safety purposes, don't need anyone getting hurt.

Just wish it had a better way to operate than me standing right in front of the vehicle to pull the "on switch".

Also wish my mount didn't take up the whole front end... Might need to find a better setup.

I think it's neat since its period correct.

Front view, note the red level which turns it "on"... Run fast to get out of way!

The winch is very cool. They do not make a better looking anywhere. If you use a buffer and some polishing compound it will dazzle. I would lose the bumper though. Drop the winch down about a foot to get it out the way of the radiator/grill. If you decide to keep it you can hardwire a switch for it, anywhere you want. The cab or the fenderwell etc...

i have a belviue and several 8274s and after many years they still work well ,in a pinch you can run the winch with jumper cables .my belvieu only winds in so its on the trailer and had a simple knife style switch

Hi,
I have FJ40 /'82 with F2 n 4F manual 4x4.
Need to install a new Warn winch capable of 10K to 12K lbs with at least 80 to 100 ft line.
In future might be swapping a 1KZ-T with Auto gear.
Very much confused about the all electric and hydraulic winches , very much tempted towards WARN® ZEON® 12 Platinum (CE Version)
http://www.warn.com/truck/winches/ZEON_12Pltnm.shtml
but the thing runs on remote with rechargeable battery (which might not be a long lasting solution) and I might be switching the winch between another FJ40 with a 1HD-T ,UZ or UR series motors either manual or auto trannys (ATM no work still on F2 and not running, intended for rock n mud use)
So, my question is which is the best winch model or option to go for ?
Should be rugged ,powerful, tough and durable.
best regards
M A K

so here's a picture taken from the driver's side. . . it shows the openings you refer to as well. Am I to believe that this confirms it is a Belleview? If so. . . where do you take these to be refurbished if anyone knows?

Honestly, they are pretty simple to work on. Basically, just an electric motor and gears. If you go into the winching forum, there are several threads on the Belleview winch. This one - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/be...ginal-inst-parts-diagram.282585/#post-9420754 - has lots of good info. Tear into it yourself and give it a go. You may fix it.

you're underestimating my ability to screw it up. . . Best that I simply find someone local to look at it for me. I spoke with a Warn dealer who has told me that there are no replacement parts for this vintage Belleview winch which could be problematic obviously.

I have the same winch ready to be refurbed. Mine came with the control wires as well - they mount under the dash, run through the firewall to the winch. There are three wires - I will snap a photo of them tonight and post. Actually just googled and found this image:

nice, thanks. where are you taking yours to be refurbished/rebuilt and how did you find them?

It's not working now, right? What's the worst that could happen? It doesn't work even more? The first time I used mine, it lasted for about 5 seconds before dying. I pulled it apart and found the brush wires all corroded. One of the wires burnt in half. I replaced all the brushes with some from the hardware store and all is still working good several years later.

i retract my statement after a closer look and the pictures of joyRidaz. cruiser drew you sir are correct!!

Before you put the "power " to it, be sure there is oil in it and if not take it apart and clean out all the crud, then add some oil and test it. These are pretty easy to refurbish. If the motor is bad a rebuilt one can be had for approx 170.00. Just goggle parts for Bellview winch and there are motors and parts available.

The Warn 5687 is a great winch. A feature that is nice and went away with the 8274 is free spooling rather than power in and power out. The winch will polish up nicely; I use an alloy polish called Wenol but probably any alloy wheel polish would do the trick.

Warn has stickers and if you drop them an email, they may send you a package at no cost; they did for me (the glowing endorsement of the serviceability of their product after 35+ years of ownership may have helped). Unfortunately, the selection of "W" stickers they have now are too big for the space available on the motor where the original sticker was placed, but some of the others are useable (see photos).

I bought my 5687 in 1975 and it has provided reliable service over the years. You do need to check the oil whenever you service your engine, especially if you keep it outdoors or drive through deep water as water can get into the gear box. I would recommend lowering that mount to a position between the frame members, I'm just sayin.......

You'll be glad you saved that winch.

The 8274 has a "clutch" knob that disengages the drive and lets it free spool.

Nice job on your winch.

Always wondered what that knob was for on the "modern" winches. Those Warn folks think of everything :).
