@Kayaker - you have the front-end that I've been envisioning for my rig... Eventually. Can u shoot a picture from the ground looking up, so I can get an idea of how your winch is mounted?

Or maybe you can describe the technique... Do I need to get a mounting plate fabbed that fits inside the c channel to the frame? And is that shelf actually attached to the vertical plate that the winch feet attaches to? Tricky to express, but hopefully you know what I'm trying to ask...

Hey joyRidaz. Here are some photos of the bumper when it was off the Cruiser for a refinish. As you can see in the first photo, the plate is welded to the back of the stock bumper making a channel. The left side of this photo is the top of the bumper and the plate overlaps more on top than on bottom. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of the plate without the paper mask so you can't see the size of the rectangular hole in the plate. Suffice it to say, it's about 1.5X the height of the cutout in the bumper and the same width as the winch spool.

On the second photo you can see that I cut a rectangular slot for the cable using the fairlead as a template.

On the bottom photo you can see the weld along the top of the bumper. It's welded the same way on the bottom. The plate is 3/8" thick and covers the entire distance between the triangular plates that sit on top of the frame to which the stock bumper attaches. On the front of the bumper, the two holes on either side of the cable cutout are for the fairlead bolts, one of which doubles as the mounting bolt for the spool side of the winch. The two holes on the far right of the cutout are for the mounting bolts for the gear side of the winch.

In the nearly 40 years that I've had and used this winch, I've never had a problem with the mounting or the bumper bending or flexing as a result of using the winch. I cannot say the same for running the bumper into trees and other immoveable objects.

There you have it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks @Kayaker that looks like a great and doable set up. And it really looks sharp, not taking away from the classic front end of our forties!

It seems like mine will be more difficult to cut off the absurd setup the PO out on there... Eventually I'll post up pics one I tackle this after checking off a few more pressing todos.

Thanks again for the inspiration and tactical details!

great winch, but your limited to the in cab controller, no remote. If your really not going to use it much, then i would rebuild it and leave it, but if you think your going to use it a 74+ 8274 would be a better choice

I love the 8274, have 3 of them

the mount on your 40 looks pretty similar to the one on my 82 with 8274-50

I think that's exactly what I'm going to do. Thanks!

I will upload a photo tonight of my bumper that came with the winch. I believe it is stock. It is definitely thicker steel than the regular bumper. Not quite 1/4" steel but pretty close.

It's my understanding that that winch was an option on cruisers at some point.

Not necessarily. I didn't mount my controls in the cab for years. I just wired up a momentary switch (push button) into a handle with about 20 feet of wire. I had alligator clips on the ends of the wire. One wire would go to the battery, the other to the solenoid. Pretty simple, really. It works from the driver's seat, or you can stand outside and use it.

Granted, the newer 8274's are sweet and work great. I would never dissuade anyone from that path. But, this is the winch I have on my 40, and it does what I need it to do. For the OP, you already have it. If you can get it to work, it will save you the $1900 you would spend on a new one.
