Where did you get the small cast fairlead for wire, that would make my approach angle even better.

Thanks I found a couple on line
Just got done pre-stretching the wire because I know it will get used this weekend:grinpimp:

Nay I think you will like how it turned out and the approach angle turned out better than I thought it would once I had the winch and plate in hand and could mess around with it.

Agreed - the winch itself is very nicely positioned, the fairlead is out there but it is also high up and you can fix that over time.

Here is my bumper from the side - the mount for me will be tight and I have a general question...

...If I were to mount on top of the rails, using light rock crawling winch with only 50 ft. of synthetic (I'd carry an extra length to attach for longer pulls), is there a need for any fairlead/hawse? The rope would never hit any surface, so I'm curious what is gained in this type of setup?

Not sure I understand the question but unless all your pulls are straight ahead of you the fairlead wouold be needed to guide the rope back onto the drum.

I have my powerplant mounted on top of the frame. But that was only because the powerplant does not face mount, only under mount. I've had no issues and have pulled several hard pulls on her. I thought about dropping it down between the frame rails but then the top of the spool would not line up with the lead.

FINALLY!

I had been looking for pictures of that kind of setup for awhile, and finally gave up. Thanks.

Makes sense - I think you understood the question. You wouldn't want a long pull at an angle without a fairlead, because the rope would wind on the side of the drum you were pulling from...?

I am going to pick up one of the small steel hawse fairleads and that will solve alot of the problem.
When I pre-stretched mine line today the fairlead really helps guide the wire along the drum.
I am no winch expert but I think at least one of the small fairleads would be good to use
I think that no fairlead would make it a PITA

WTF?

you put a receiver mount on top of the bumper mounts?

It looks like he also has brackets for a snow blade on there too,

I don't know if I would mount the winch in that manner, but whatever works.

Well I got the winch yesterday and played around with the plate on top of the rails and on the bottom.
Funny enough is that even though it sticks out about 1.5 to 2 further on top of the rails it still falls pretty close to being in line with the approach angle I originally had which was pretty much the bottom of the frame rails
I think that under the rails kills the approach angle more than on top.
The thing that kills it is the roller fairlead whether it is mounted on top or on the bottom, but on the top at least it is alittle more up out of the way
I mounted the winch on top of the frame rails and it worked out pretty well
I did have to cut the center section of the valance below the grill but that does not bother me.
I will also have to build a tube bumper around it in the future and also add some gussets below the winch plate
But it is good for now
I used a smitty bilt universal plate and a warn M8000 winch, the winch is nice and compact and worked out well.
Later on down the line I will remote mount the solanoid box under the hood some where and move the controls to the cab.
All in all I think it worked out well.
I am a little spent from messing with that thing all day.
That sucker is heavy
I will post pics in the morning.

If you ever need a semi-local Fabricator, I am in Madison Heights, VA. I actually have a 07 Tacoma here now which is from Richmond. He is allowing me to re-design our 05+ rear bumper on his truck.... See you around

so...... it is removable using the rear receiver, and you drive around with it mounted like that every day?

yes

Yes it is removable and I don't drive around all day with it.It can go on back or on front or on my flat bed trailer.I was just taking some pics of it to see what you all think.:flipoff2:
