I have a 60 center section with 4.88s and a arb will the 3rd fit the 55 axle ?

Yes, I'm running 3.7's out of an '81 BJ60.
Really that works? I thought there was some sort of modification that had to be done first.
Maybe for the gears but not for the carrier.

so bolt in,stab with 55 axles and go?

So Charles, I thought the third included the gears. Am I crazy here?
All I can say is the carriers are the same. If anything it would be a little clearanceing to make the 4.88 gear fit.

Fitting 60 birfs into a 55/40 housing takes some slight grinding.
Just for clarity sake the 60 birfs would have to be fitted on the 55 axles b/c of the different widths.
The real minutia is that the short side axle is the same length, it is the long side axle that needs to be swapped out.

Check the driveshaft flange to pinion flange match...other than that, yup.

as pighead mentioned, the flange is different, but you can swap the slip shaft portions of the driveshafts
