Wilderness camping around Ouray, CO?

I've camped at Angel Creek Campground just outside of Ouray. Primitive sites and close to the river. Might be an option if Ampitheater is full.

if you take the trailhead to Imogene from the town of ouray, there are some camp grounds up about 1.5 miles.....five or six on the left and some new ones, about six on uphill right. Those should be okay but i think the pass will still be closed

Those are good spots near town. I often use them in the winter when climbing. Never tried in the summer.

Interesting, never been up that gulch before. Are you talking about the campground? Or other likely looking locations per my maps?

The road with the campgrounds is off of 550. It is the road you take to get to the Clear Lake trail. The campgrounds on the creek are cool but you can follow the road past them and camp in the middle of nowhere as well. We stayed in a campground that was free and had toilets that was right on the creek.

don't know if it's been mentioned but American Basin off of Cinnamon pass is awesome and very secluded. Plus the camp sites are not much more than 2.5 hours from a neighboring 14er summit, Handies peak.

My experiences in the locations mentioned in this thread are that only Alaska has more mosquitos per cubic foot than the Colorado high country back areas. One day late in June the wife and I stopped on the Grand Mesa and I didn't even get both feet on the ground before I was stormed by them and when I jumped back inside the truck, the cab was full of them. Same thing at the southwest entry into Cinnamon - stopped to take a piss in the woods - try keeping the skeeters away while holding your Johnson with one hand.

And God help you if you have BPH...

I'll bet they are thick and hungry up there in June.

By late July through September when I'm usually there, they must settle down. There are like 4 different groups of them that come out in camp as the temp changes, as they come and go until dark. After that, not too big a deal in my experience.

Yeah, take your favorite repellent. You'll need it from time to time.

We just got back from Lake City. Creede, and South Fork, only a few mosquitos. Not enough to even worry about repellent.
