'91 with Chev 350 TBI, 35" GoodYear MTR's, stock tranny, stock gears, stock axles (open diffs.)

These trucks are incredible without lockers. I would advise anyone building an unlocked 80 that lockers should not be at the top of the mod list. Learn how to drive it without lockers first.

Rig currently has full floater rear axle with factory elec locker (locker not functional yet). 4.88's hopefully coming this winter.

Amen!! Those looking for a truck should not be diswayed from buying a solid truck without lockers unless one with lockers is readily available. I've been wheeling mine without lockers for six years now. Would I like lockers? Sometimes. Do I think I can't live without them? No way. Besides, its fun to make obstacles unlocked when guys with lockers don't make it.;p

People forget that it's all about the driver. No matter how big a rig can be, if the driver does not how to use it, it's worthless.

True......but add lockers to that driver and one can successfully go places where they could not before.

I won't argue that one bit. I wheeled my 40 for years with open diffs, following locked rigs places I probably shouldn't have been. But it forces you to learn how to pick lines and, more importantly, learn how to drive. Then I added a rear locker. The places I was able to go didn't change much but a few places became a little easier. Then I added a front locker. As you say, a whole new world opens up. But the places I went once my 40 was locked at both ends would probably never have happened had I not learned how to drive the truck first.

Case in point, I never would have made it here without both lockers. But places like this should never have unlocked rigs in them. The places where you need two lockers to get to are that way for a reason.

This is a discussion that happens all the time and its probably a good reminder to people with lockers that a good driver in an unlocked rig can be very impressive, and a good driver in a locked rig can make the most challenging obstacles seem very boring. Bottom line is nothing compensates for some good seat time.
 
Mmmmm. I love the mud and water shots. NICE PICS!! It floors me what can be done in/to a Toyota over the weekend...and then the rig's ready on Monday morning to commute to work!

Sweet, photo! Most Buggies Get denied on that line, so i would bet that the tuck is hooked up to a winch, if not Congrats! i cant wait to run that trail!

Oh yes, as much as I like the photo and miss the truck, let there be no mistake I am winching. My carbed 2F would not have enjoyed trying a full on launch up that wall without the winch. Hell, it didn't enjoy it even with the winch......where do you think all that smoke came from?;p
 
Since there hasn't been an all out bashing of my posting a 40 in the 80's section I'll post a couple more. However I feel this one is appropriate. Some of you may know DMC (or dmc if your case sensitive) aka Dave Connors who is currently in Baja Mexico on a SOLO expedition that he began last week in Seattle and is headed to Ushuaia, Argentina. You can see his Expedition Americas thread in the expedition builds section. He's got one sweet 80. But you may not know that he also has a 40. The above pic of my 40 on the waterfall at the end of Upper Helldorado in Moab is a sweet memory for me that also involves Dave.

We began that day with 5 trucks planning to run that trail. The first one in broke badly 5' into the trail (tore the knuckle off the axle) The second truck bailed out so he could offer up his truck as spare parts to get the first one out. The third just bailed. That left Dave and I to run it alone. Still one of my best wheeling memories ever. At the time it was easily the most challenging wheeling I had done and still is with the exception of maybe the Little Sluice. So as an homage to Dave I felt like posting a couple pics of his 40 from that same day. Hope you don't mind. Godspeed brutha!

you can tell from this photo that I winched out first and we are using my winch to yank Dave's up the waterfall at the end. Helldorado is a sweet trail. When we finished that day, I said to myself I'd never do it again, once was enough. But a couple years later I'm itchin to run it again.

This is what got us thinking about running it in the first place. Ryan Davis decided on a whim to try it one night after we finished running the now closed Lower Helldorado. Consider that Ryan's 40 at the time was completely stock drivetrain and gearing with 33's and lockers. Amazing that he completed the trail with that truck IN THE DARK (solo and with no winch).

Absolutley - My wife and I did over thirty miles last weekend on great trails (w/two quads), camped the night way out in the woods, packed up Sunday afternoon, went home and drove to work Monday AM!! That's my idea of a great weekend. :beer:
 
your in NC now right? tag along next time, no its not hard core, but 3 days and 45 miles and not seeing a sole........priceless. ONSC went this past weekend, and were good for several trips a year.

maybe not "wild" in the hardcore rockcrawling sense, but I think of this as definitely in the wild category.

Mineral Basin! Right? Awesome place. I used to drive that in my 91 reg cab Toyota pickup all the time. Close enough to town but far enough away to be just sweet.

Uh....no. That photo is coming down off the top of Blackbear Bass toward Telluride, Colorado. Much more exciting the Mineral Basin, although Mineral Basin is a lot of fun too.

And how's this for an Oops. You must remember my truck has no lockers, but that normally doesn't stop me. This particular time I slipped off a ledge and the front end was bound up on the front bumper and the front tire wouldn't climb, and the rear axle was up against another rock so i couldn't back up. Yes it was retarded.:rolleyes: Ended up taking the winch.
