i purchased my 91 10 yrs ago for around 6k and put $25k into it not including gas...how did you manage to only put 2k into it. Tires alone are over 2k...lolI bought my 91 fj80 for $4,000 20 years ago and have put a total of $2,000 in parts on her me doing the labor and put 100k miles on her. Probably could sell for $10 k now. Not a bad deal. Should add she has never required a tow. Always gets me home. Don’t mind the slow engine. I’m “just crusin” anyways. Should add I try not to think about the gas she guzzles, anything to keep her happy

When I bought 80 had good tires lasted 50k. Put one set on from Costco at about $600. I recently installed new radiator auto zone about $350. Brake pads front only about $35. Brake master about $75. New front seat belt used $150. New door latch $100. Walmart oil and filters $400. New shocks and steering damper $300. total about $2000. I should add my 80 has never been in a shop. I do all my work and keep an eye on things. Never needed a tow. Benefit of doing your own work you catch things before they become a problem
yeah, $25k worth of work is all parts and my own labor i should clarify, otherwise, it would be easily double that amount. If i am just building a Daily, it would probably be closer to your ball park number. Being on 37" tires. and suspension work to withstand the abuse on the trails really takes a toll on these cars. But i didn't buy the 80 for grocery's or weekend haircuts...i have put 100k miles on it in 10 yrs, all road trips and dirt road and rocks.... These motors are so darn reliable that if you do the basic maintenance, it will go 1/2 a million miles or more.

You know the fj80 was designed to be off road capable out the door. My rig has seen it all. As long as you do not abuse an 80 no reason you should not be able to get 300k or more miles out of it even when driving all the miles off pavement. No reason to put a lot of money into a stock 80 unless you are going for “the look”

That’s exactly the kind of person a Hagerty writes articles for though. It’s just a bunch of people whose dad never abused them for holding the flash light wrong or putting away tools in the wrong spot. I wonder how many people buy 80 series with the thought these are bullet proof, then they take it for a “pre-purchase” inspection just to find out it need 3k worth of work.

06-09 you'll be fine. 4.4 AJ and ZF 6HP are bullet proof.
Bought my LR3 off a buddy for $1500 in Redlands, CA. Ugly, but a rust free beater that I've driven all over the country. 2" Terrafirma HD coilover's on 32's, rebushed the front suspension and do nothing but change the oil. Honestly one of the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned.

I was not going to post but seeing this is now a Range Rover thread what the heck. Just put 100 miles on my 2007 RR sport 4.4 engine after installing the Monroe coil overs. What a difference. Handles great and took pot holes broken pavement and 80 on the highway great rock solid. The old air suspension was original with nearly 200 k miles and the shocks must have been shot. Cost $700 and my labor. Surprised how easy it was. Now no compressor and all the sensors and electronics to worry about. Next time I need tires going your route with rims and tires
