Dunno who the author is, but it’s Meh! Nothing new. Felt like when you get your tires rotated. It’s feels something happened but did not.

Mmmmmmm word salad for breakfast. If you think any LandRover built between 91-97 looks better than a 80 series I’m gonna have to see the men you’ve been dating cause I’m sure they’re no George Clooney. The 80 series in every respect is built like a brick sheet house compared to any of the vehicles mentioned in the article also good luck trying to find any OE parts for any of the aforementioned vehicles.

These articles are written for a crowd who can't wrench and think 30+ year old cars needing restoration are a good investment. If you're going into this because you think it is a financially sound idea , you won't enjoy. Hobbies are called hobbies for a reason.

If you own one with the approach of learning how to wrench, understanding how things are made, and generally acquiring some skills, then you'll get some value out of this game. Otherwise the market is already saturated with plenty of misinformed fellows who bought a 5k truck for 15k, then proceeded to dump 25k in dealer marked-up OEM parts and local shop labor, only to be wanting to make all the money they have into it back on BringATrailer.

I bought my 91 fj80 for $4,000 20 years ago and have put a total of $2,000 in parts on her me doing the labor and put 100k miles on her. Probably could sell for $10 k now. Not a bad deal. Should add she has never required a tow. Always gets me home. Don’t mind the slow engine. I’m “just crusin” anyways. Should add I try not to think about the gas she guzzles, anything to keep her happy

I was given a 2007 Range Rover sport and like the way it looks. Only land rover besides the 90 I like how it looks. The engine has been excellent with 200k miles and 0 problems. The rest of car not too bad but way to complex and way over engineered. In fact this weekend I am removing the air bag suspension and replacing with coil overs from Monroe. Parts $700 and job actually looks easy. The air bags work but just cutting future problems off at the pass. I could never trust this vehicle off road. Just too much on the frame to scrape and damage to leave you stranded. I should add Land Cruiser peeps always wave when passing. Land Rover never, as they apparently had a long conversation at the repair shop that morning while picking up their vehicles

If someone gave me any LandRover/Range rover I wouldn’t accept it. I assume it has the 5.0 ford motor?

"After having my bank account bled dry by one of the most notoriously reliable vehicles ever built, I swore off the nameplate completely and vowed never again to suffer the financial indignity of maintaining another 30-year-old Land Cruiser. "

Nevertheless, just two years later he buys yet another FJ80. The guy is obviously a glutton for punishment, as evidenced by his link to a Scout Traveler project that he sunk $30,000 into. That story is appropriately titled "The suffering is the point".

And his answer to the question posed in the article title? There is no answer.

"... there’s just some inexplicable quality that the 80 has that no other ’90s 4×4 can match. I wish I knew what it was.."

It’s the 4.4 jaguar engine. And as I said the engine has 200k and never had an issue. 300hp and still goes like a rocket. This engine is known to be ultra reliable and this model and year of Range Rover is considered to be reliable if normal maintenance is done. I have owned this rr for six years and only spent $500 in parts and never needed a tow. Been very reliable and drives well. Figure I keep it until it needs major work then junk it. Update I just installed the rear coil overs. Do the front tomorrow. Nice not to have the complications of air suspension

No chain rattle at start up now that’s rare usually see that around 150-200k sometimes earlier. But maybe it already had been done. I’m sick and damn tired of working on European cooling systems ATM getting good aftermarket parts is a joke now. I’ve got a 2015 BMW 3 series that I just pulled the turbo to replace a coolant feed tube then I was putting the rats nest of cooling lines back together and a disconnect wouldn’t snap in place so the job got shelved till I could get a OE hose, FML can’t wait till Monday. Then I gotta pull a Subaru motor. I’m truly blessed.

The engine starts and purrs like a well oiled sewing machine. The engine has never been opened. Change oil regularly with synthetic. Transmission is flawless. Only thing I have done is new alternator. And normal brake wear items. Replaced rusted brake line and that’s it. Surprised myself at the reliability and interior materials excellent quality. I will finish the coil overs today and that should eliminate half of future issues. Again this L320 model is known for reliability
