And if you did do it were you happy or not with the outcome? Besides the orange fan clutch did you do any other mods? If not what would you do differently?

I’m in California so the turbo option isn’t CARB certified so while some of you might think thats the better option I dont really want to get into that. I know the SC is CARB compliant and thats what I want to consider.

My truck isn’t super modified besides a drawer system and a rear bumper, I am interested in adding a roof top tent and a front bumper and possibly going from 33” tires to 35’s. So Im hopeful that the performance gains with the SC will help with those potential mods.

I bought one awhile back and had it on the shelf when they were available from Toyota and got a good deal on it. I have been happy with it. Your truck won't be that much faster but where it really helps is the torque. It basically makes my old 80 drive more like a modern car and negates a lot of the weight I am carrying.

Our buddy has it on his 95.....as is out of the box he's happy. Without any other modification, I believe he's only pushing 5psi.

@raisinhell2 what is your opinion you have installed one of these I think!

Supercharger Is the 35hp Toyota forgot to put in the 80 series. I think it is one of the best Mods you can do. It does have it problems . Which we have resolved . extra heat and positive crank case pressure. It also has it's limits with the parameters of the factory ecu. All systems must be working properly or your AFR will go out of range. They are plug and Play but I suggest checking and monitoring for AFR and exhaust temps. WE offer a blue hub fan just for forced induction engine it's about $100 cheaper the land tanks orange hub(which is a great fan clutch as well) but ours requires trimming your fan shroud to use the stock fan instead of the small one that comes with the kit. We also offer our catch can system with inline High performance pcv valve. This is not a generic can made to fit an 80. It is a custom made can made just for forced induction fzfe engines . You can see our line of products for forced induction fzfes here https://www.precisionlandcruisers.com/category/80-series. These are products we developed over the years of messing with super charged engines . as for Mods for more boost that is a slippery slope you can buy smaller pulleys to increase boost. a 3 inch pulley will get you to 6 -7 lbs but takes your afr out of range. It will run great but even the smallest vacuum leak will lean you out enough to burn your engine up very very fast.. We love talking about supercharged 80 series if you have any questions feel free to give us a call 719 757 0181

Being in California, the SC is your only option. At stock its pretty anemic at 146HP/191FTLBS at the wheels (212/275ftlbs) with the added 25% hp, it will compensate the sluggish performance but will still struggle up steep grades like the Grapevine with added weight to the rig.
I say pull the trigger, it will improve the driving experience. 😎

Yeah I drive the Grapevine along with Sherwin and Conway on 395 so I know what a slug the vehicle can be loaded up with camp and fishing gear. I’m not looking to set any speed records just make the experience a little more enjoyable.

Ive been quoted $2k to install the SC and the fan clutch. Is that a good ballpark estimate? And is this something any good mechanic can do or do I need to seek out a LC specialist? I’m in Orange County so I have a few shops within 45 minutes that specialize in Toyota 4x4 work.

You could just pay a mechanic to put the new crank pulley on and do the rest yourself.
I highly recommend Landtank’s extension harness for the throttle body. I replaced the main engine harness with a new harness earlier this summer and used Landtank’s extension to complete the job. If your crank pulley is done, the job is easy.

" but will still struggle up steep grades " Not sure what kit you installed ,set up wrong or what your comparing it too . I can do 100 mph over vail pass in the 1 I showed a pic of on 37s. It's anything but sluggish for a big tire 80 series . Now compared to my supercharged LS 80 it's sluggish but so are turbod 80s with big boost.

I've been considering this as well, ever since I went to 35s on factory gearing. Been on a few trips fully loaded with gear, and the lack of power is just annoying. Around town though I can live with it.

Is the driving experience similar to a stock 100 series? Or would I need to regear in addition to the SC? My 100 (2004 so it's a 5spd) on 33s feels like a sports car in comparison.

My buddy (magnuson) SC without any other modification you listed is still dragging going up grapevine in S.Cal fully loaded headed out to Anza Borrego.
My stage 2 turbo from Cruisers and Company on 37s is anything but a dog going that same grapevine pass on that same trip. Cali folks know of these roads: Tioga pass- no problem, Sonora pass-no problem, Tehachapi pass- no problem.

Look closely at your catch can😉

When i drove my buddys magnuson SC (without any added modifications) on 315s, slee front, 4x4labs rear, WK sliders and 3" lift around town and freeway...it drove similar to my 06 gen1 sequia which is 273/314ftlbs....which was great.

Being from Colorado I don't know your guys roads . Vail pass here is a Monster climb. its a 35 40 mph climb for a non boosted 80 series. The Sc rigs I build have no issues with it . I just sold a rig 33s on stock gears with a SC it flew up the pass as well. I hear other guys saying they are disappointed in the SC performance , I don't get it . They must have some high expectation trying to turn a shoe box into a race car. I tell my customers its not neck snapping performance it makes the 80 just very pleasurable to drive... With the plus side you can take it to any dealership if needed and have it serviced. I just don't see the built fzfes with 7+ lbs boost lasting very long(150k Plus). I've seen what 5lbs does to these engines in 200k. I wasn't implying your rig(nice catch can and pcv system by the way) was a dog. The turbo rigs I have rode in run very nice.. Compared to my supercharged LS it is (875+hp On a basically stock 6.0 ho engine just a cam). All 80s are dogs even other Ls swapped ones. @Presidio 2k is a great price as long as it's done right. I don't advice bolting a SC to an older stock engine without doing at least a head with a cometic gasket and arp studs. We are right about 3kish to do a SC install but we do a lot more . We peel back the harness and extend the wires so nothing runs over the valve cover and looks better than factory . We also weld in a 3rd 02 bung so I can install a wide-band 02 sensor so I can hook up my afr computer. We don't let any SCs go out of our shop without recording the AFR before it leaves . Even being plug and play anyone who does is just guessing and hoping it is right . Takes about 15 mins with a small to med size vacuum leak to cook your cats.

@Presidio
To do it right i would invest the $ and take it to shop that is very well versed with SC. It will still be cheaper than an LS swapped (done by a shop).
Precision land cruiser would be the shop of my choice that @raisinhell2 owns.
Also there are many catch cans out there and none compares to precision land cruiser which has been rigorously gone thru R&D. And by the way, they sell the modified blue fan clutch for boosted rigs.(which both of my boosted rigs have)

There are a lot of opportunities to enhance the supercharger. Dealing with the heat issue is by far the first thing I’d recommend.

After that it’s basically user preference. But every improvement you make builds on the improvements made earlier.

I blew my head gasket 12k miles ago (@211,000 miles now). Had the engine rebuilt. And it’s been running strong since then. Doubt they used ARP studs but they told me they were using OEM parts for everything.
