which winch

I'm in the market for a winch, I want to put it on a multi mount so I can also use it on my trailer . I'm thinking an 8,000 lb. should be sufficient,just not sure which brand or if there is a good deal out there I haven't seen yet.I'm sure it won't be used multiple times on every trip but I also don't want some junk that will leave me stranded when i do need it

I'm not a fan of multimounts, for many reasons....but Warn is the brand of winch I run. IMO, make your own custom cradle with a double-receiver mount...the single-center receiver mounts have issues with loading under hard side pulls.

SpaceGhost is running the new TMaxx winches and like it, tho the speed isn't the same as his old 8274-50 (believe that's the fastest winch out tho....)

I just ordered one a month ago. I decided on the XD9000i for my 78 FJ40. I went a little bigger than necessary but got a really good price. I got it for $765 shipped. I have yet to actually get it from Warn,(probably next week) but for the money it comes with a roller fairlead and the intergrated electricals.

Check out Liquid Offroad, he had the best price I have found on the 8274 as well. Mine has taken a while to be delivered, but I am in the midst of a frame up so I am not in a huge hurry for it.

i would recommend the warn 8274 also. i'm using one and love it. haven't had any issues pulling out fullsize trucks with my 40.

woody has a good point with the multipoint. fab your own mount, and use a double reciever. attachment.

Warn is the only way to go .... I would spend the extra for a 9000 now so you will have it if you need it .. not the other way around

Warn 12K....and be done with it....

Unless of course....you are going to go with the ARB industrial bar, then you can install the best winch ever..the 8274-50.

I'm with Woody on this one. Not a fan of multimounts but to each his own. My choice would be the 8274 all the way.

PTO's rock...however, I've found my rig doesn't run well when it's either A> upside down or B> under water....and if the rig ain't runnin, the PTO ain't pullin...and I HAVE had situations where it was easier to right my own rig than to risk winching another one to me for recovery...



Your trailer winch will be a rolling load and could just as easily be a 5000#'er....or, if you don't mind the occasional double line, a 3500#er might do it too....would work for rolling loads, not well if its gotta be drug on the trailer tho.

Isn't it true that you can run a PTO winch off the starter motor?
Isn't it also true that electrical winches run poorly under water? At least after a while?

I mean, I understand that perhaps there are some effective differences here, but I had to come to Green Weenie's defense, for once:

upside down off the starter motor still ain't too good for the oiling system....and likely not too good either if you have water in your exhaust or intake....

Electrics run fine under water, but I'd do a good cleaning afterwards....I've flushed mine with distilled water and re-greased and never had a problem. My 1974 Warn Bellevue was used in some NASTY conditions, and with nothing more than a yearly cleaning, it still works great to this day.

thanks for all the input. I had a used 8274 and sold it after figuring out what it would actually weigh in a multi mount.The double receiver is an idea we were kicking aroud but right now the toy has single receivers front and rear. Maybe some new bummper/hitch building this winter but for this season i'll just stick with the centered receiver.

Is anybody using Warn's new XP 9500 winch with the bigger 6 hp motor?

I'm a big fan of the 8274-50 but I like bigger motors too.

if your gonna put in on a multi mount, I would look at the weight of the 8274 vrs a 8 or 9K low mount. Same with a 12k Warn........thats a heavy SOB and would be NO FUN moving around from cruiser to trailer.

as much as I LOVE the 8274 it might not be best suited to your needs.

heres what I would prolly do. Buy a used 8274 for the cruiser(prolly $500), then buy a new M8000 for $500 for the trailer or a used one for a few hun.

there was an article in an aussie mag about an 8274 or something being supplied by warn with a chassis, to make it a multi mount... don't know if you guys get that or not.
