What to look for in a used '91?

I'm considering a used '91, 138K miles, looks like power everything, ABS, sunroof, etc. I don't know much about landcruisers, except they are supposed to go forever, so 138K shouldn't be a huge deal, right?

What should I look for in terms of likely problem areas, etc.? Worth it to get a compression check done?

Looks to be in good shape ... questimated price?
Thanks
Eric

I don't think a '91 will have ABS. The only known issue with the '91/'92 fj80 is an undersized EFI relay wire. It raises its head when you can't get the rig to start. Easy fix.

Check the usual stuff, but add front axle seals to the list. Price depends on your local market and rig condition, probably between $6k and $10k.

some might object to the statement that a '91 has power everything. In fact, you may be told that the one thing that does not have any power at all is the engine!

I got mine in Dec. with 170K on it for $4,500 -- no rust, just needed a valve lashing and will need a front axle service soon -- put 13K on it since -- check windows (do they all work), sunroof (does it work), coolant condition, maint. history, and rear hatch for rust -- I'm sure there will be more --

-- '91s came with cloth seats (no power) and no frt/rr locking diff option, also, tinted glass wasn't an option, but third row seating was --

-- the 91s also have a 12V engine, larger trans. than the 24V engines, and smaller wheels and tires than the 24V engines (93 and up) --

31 x 10.50 tires were a stock size - roughly the same as the 93 & ups ;)

I'm pushing 200k on mine. Check the Cruise. Front axle seals. Look for leaks. Condition and color of coolant. Check all the electric stuff to make sure everything works. The EFI relay wiring is an easy fix and it does not occur in every 91. I would think the price should be under well under $7500 right now. 5s and 6s would be pretty fair price. Cheaper than that and it is a good deal if in good condition. NO ABS or rear disc brakes in 91.

In 1991/1992 the "stock" tire size was 235/75R15 on steel rims...31x10.5R15s on aluminum rims was an option...almost all 1992s had the optional aluminum/31 package, while you can find a few 1991s with the steel wheels.

If it does have the steelies...and you get it and want a set of aluminum...talk to me. ;)

BTW....I love my LC, even with the 3fe. Personally, I seldom need more power and love the longevity of the 3fe.

...o' yeah, and I purchased mine with 172K on it back in October of 2002 for $7500. They've gone down a bit now....5 or 6 K would be fair I would think. I've got 186K on mine now and it's still the most reliable vehicle I've owned!

bought mine last year for 5k now has 227,000 miles. It won,t pass anything including
a gas station.great in the sand, best in the mud.check door frames ,hatch frames, and hood for markings from a paint pen.Thats how I found mine had been wrecked.still got a good deal but I could have talked'em down if I'd known.Good luck

Wow, you aren't kidding!! Got to drive it today, and I hope something was wrong with it, because I can't imagine anybody buying one of those new with that little get-up-and-go! Took forever to hit 60, not sure it would've gotten to 75. Other then that, I really liked driving it ... very solid feel, well laid out interior, etc. I'll be looking for a >= 93 I guess!

Must have been something wrong with it, before I sold my 91 I regularly drove 80 mph with no problema. Of course, I wasn't street racing.

Careeful or you will incur the rath of the 3FE GODS!!!!!!
no seriously there was an issue as I can be up to speed by the end of a decent freeway on ramp and I am on 33" tires and stck 4.10 gears.

this is just simply not true of a healthy 3FE --- I drove my '94 and my '91 around yesterday for various reasons -- the first time I'd driven my '94 since October --

-- I really have grown fond of the '91 though --

I'm proud to say my 150 hp 3FE pulled 1999 3/4 ton chevy 4x4 from the ditch during our last snow. He had a 6 inch lift, humungo tires, a sticker on the back showing a kid urinating, 300+ horse power, and a 4-wheel drive that wouldn't engage!!!! Dear lord that put a smile on my face. :D

Yeah I swapped in a 3FE. Wiseguy! :flipoff2:
Until about a month ago I had both a 91 and a 94. I'm starting construction of a 12 unit apartment building and wanted the additional $ to make the project work. Yeah I had no problem with the 3FE but if one of them had to go, it's a no brainer.
BTW- Anyone looking to rent an apartment? :D :D :flipoff2:

Ok I'm am logged in - so to answer your question imho - What to look 4? A 93 or newer engine!!!!!! Unless of course you get a real steal! Good Luck!
