What leak is this?

And how screwed am I?

I was underneath doing an oil change, decided to look around, and noticed oil residue on what I believe is the transmission pan and transfer case. Tried to get some decent pictures, but didn’t do great. The transmission pan has staining and the transfer case has it quite caked on.

2015, 135k, normal city driving, wife’s vehicle.

Maybe clean up what you see underneath and then look for fresh oil in a few days? I’ve found that a small mirror on a telescoping handle can help look in hidden places.

What were the Toyota engineers drinking?

You would need well trained monkey to do the replacement job. Short of removing the intake manifold I truly have no idea how to perform the breathers swap.

Well took me forever to find them, so the photos below.

1. Suspend yourself from the engine lift over the intake manifold. Just kidding. Remove MAF sensor wire and engine cover holder rod - 2 10mm bolts.

2. You would be laying down over the airbox standing on the step tool of some sort.

3. Look for the indentation right in the center of the firewall insulator panel, right in the center of...

Confirm where the oil is coming from first before you dive into breathers. It doesn’t seem like the truck gets the kind of use that would affect a breather? You can maybe confirm what the is by smell. If the t-case has regular gear oil in it, there will be that stinky smell.
