what kind of tires

I'm looking at buying some 33" tires for my 77 fj40 with about 3 1/2" lift. I use it as my daily driver and am going to be taking it all the way down to south america. right now i'm running real worn 32's but would like to go a bit bigger. what do you guys think. I also want to get good gas mileage should I go with narrower tires. oh I have a 3b with a turbo running 12 psi installed. whats a cheap (I know they are not cheap) place to buy tires?

I chose the BFG 33x9.50 15. They are the right height and yet lower rotational mass then the 12.50 tires out there. I am only running the stock 6 and need all the power I can get.

As for cost I fount mine at www.4wheelparts.com they are currently selling for $127 vs. about $180 retail each and when I ordered about 2 weeks ago shipping was free. The rub was getting them mounted at a reasonable cost, I had to go to three tire shops before I found one that would do it for a good cost.

I am not affiliated in any way with that site, just had good service.

I work with Border Patrol and those guys swear by Goodyear MTR's, I have seen a buddy runover mesquite stumps and have a single problem, I run BFG and they arn't great off road (in my opinion) In mud they gum up and lose all traction. If you want Tires for All Terains MTR's all the way

If you're going to run 33" tall tires, and you're planning an extended trip to south america, I'd make sure you can at least *fit* 33x12.50s. It would suck to gash a sidewall on a 33x9.50 and not be able to find one for 500 miles. It might be worthwhile to figure out what common sizes are down there and plan accordingly - like maybe run 16" rims since they seem to be more popular.

I don't know where you live, but Costco usually has the best prices on BFG tires, and cheap prices for mounting, balancing and roadhazard protection. WalMart seems to have the best prices on the MTR's, but they probably have to be ordered.

Don't get Interco LTB's. they don't balance out. Thornbirds are OK but ride LOUD, TSL's are good. Baja Claws are cool, BFG's will work if you stay mainly on pavement, Boggers if you're off it, MTR's are solid as hell, DC Kevlars are a good sand tire to air down with, Super Swamper SSR's have kept a LOT of guys I know very happy, *redneck voice* "ya could always gitcha sum ground hawgs"..............

and on, and on, and on. < bouncy thing rocks!

I would go with BFG ATs and like said above go with a size that you will be able to find down there. I'm running 35 BFG MTs and they're holding up great. Can hardly tell any wear and the sidewalls look like they were left alone with a 5 year old with a knife and they are still holding air and working great.

I am happy with my 33x9.5 BFG at's the Ko's are good too. I would look at availability. Where is your final destination?

BTW they have BFG's in Korea, I bet they are available S. of the Border.

The only way I can hear a difference between ATs and MTs is if I hold my head out trying to listen to the tires but there is so much other noise driving a 40 its hard to tell. If you will be wheeling any go with the MTs. They last nearly as long as the ATs and the noise isen't bad at all.

For pricing, I usually hunt up the cheapest price on the Internet (usually www.tirerack.com) than call around locally for the dealer who will match the price. You will pay no taxes on tires purchased on the Internet, but you'll pay freight and mounting. I usually find a dealer who offers a very vomparable deal (including taxes), and reduced or free mounting.

I have had MTR's on my cruiser for about 5000 miles now, and like them. They are not very noisy. They do have a 3 play sidewall and good tread wrap, which helps with the biggest problem I have had with tire - sidewall cuts. I could go with bias-ply tires, but the ride pretty rough.
