What about the stainless tubes going to manifold?
You will pull those off that leaves two plac s on the manifold that is what you will block off with plates you make or buy then all those tubes will be gone your truck will run fine

Thanks for the replies! I’m still
Scratching my head as to why someone would put a 94 engine in a 97.

What they did was pull 94 engine use your plug covers, used your accessories like your air intake, intake manifold and oil pans, ran 94 head prob block and exhaust manifolds, pull the pair system off which is the stainless stuff, block off where it bolts into exhaust manifold, change the rubber heater line that runs around over the top of pair to the newer just hardline and your done.

Killin somebody may have found a real deal on 93-94 engine and swapped in to save on cost. Or desperate in need of one and that was all that was available at the time.

They're very similar, and at their heart they are the same but there are a few important differences. It looks like you have an OBDI port on the back firewall (near the wiper motor.) You clearly have a MAF though, which I didn't think was compatible with OBDI. As noted you have the PAIR valve which was specific to '93-'94 but is easily removed.

In conjunction with the MAF and OBDII, the '95+ models usually have noticeably better gas mileage (11-14mpg for '93-'94, 15-17mpg for '95-'97.)

I love my '93/OBD1. Wouldn't mind a few extra MPG's though......

The LX did not come out until 1995. That engine has a Lexus symbol on it. Could it be that someone modified a '97 engine to resemble a '94?

Depending on how involved the person swapping the engine got, they could have swapped timing covers, oil pans and other necessities to have the complete OBD2 setup on this engine. Everything is so very close, but since they didn't remove the PAIR valve........

Otherwise, same block and head.

Does it have a crank position sensor? If it really is a 93-94 engine it shouldn’t. Maybe it’s just the head that’s been swapped.

It may have one if they swapped the timing cover. This way it would work with OBD2.

OP: Does your OBD2 port work?

Yeh the port works, my check engine light came on a few weeks ago and I had a guy at the local Toyota stealership run a diagnostic and it come up as a EGR code.

Maybe it ran hot and the head was warped and they just replaced the head, and I guess replaced the Manifold also to work with the pair valve. Who knows I bought this truck not knowing a whole lot about the fj80 so it’s my fault but wanting to learn all I can.

Ultimately its not going to really matter, you've got MAF and OBDII. Just weird that someone knew enough to mix 'n match the parts to get it all running (and supposedly smoothly?) but then went and bolted on an unused PAIR valve.

Peel it off and throw it into the classifieds, it might be worth something for folks that live in a pollution-controlled area. Maybe not a lot, but something.....

Yeh it runs like a top. Runs just as smooth as my tacoma. I have left my tacoma sitting in the driveway bc I love driving my 450 so much. s***ty gas mialage but i knew that would be with the extra weight of 35s, winch, arb, rtt rack, sliders ect...

I have a 97 engine but kept the 94 intake and OBD1.

Here is a pic of how it looks with all that stuff removed
