I failed smog and one of the reasons was a missing thermostatic air cleaner. But the air cleaner I have on it is stock, so that should be it, right? It has all the connections and the HAI valve and all that. Is there something else that connects to it that I need to check and make sure I have? Or does the mechanic that ran the test just not know what is what?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, looked it up and I think that it's the hot air circulation system, that draws air up from right next to the exhaust manifold instead of the regular air intake tube. There is a tube that comes down from the bottom of the air cleaner, makes a bend and attaches to a metal elbow that bolts to the exhaust manifold. Is all of that there?

Did you fail on the physical items test? or did it have any connection to the actual emission values?

It's it the "hot-air" tube...that's an easy fix.

You did not pass smog because of a missing heat riser pipe?

WOw, just Wow

Happened to me with my first 60. The metal elbow had rotted away, so even though I had a brand new tube, they wouldn't pass me. I went to a different shop and they didn't even notice.

I failed smog for other reasons too, but this is one that had me scratching my head. The actual smog report is on my re-smog thread http://https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/295603-re-smog-need-help.html#post4690082

So I think what I'm missing is the tube coming from the air cleaner down to the exhaust manifold. Thanks for that picture GL, it shows me exactly what I'm missing. Now I know what those extra parts that came with my used exhaust manifold is for. :o

Now that this has gotten figured out, I think I'm almost ready to have another go at the dreaded smog testing machine.

I think the idea is that the system warms the engine up, thus requiring less time on choke, which is better for the environment:rolleyes:

You should be able to buy preheater hose in the correct size at most any parts store.

as I recall ....under choke you are running rich..., the quicker you get off the choke the better emissions will be.

Will it ever end?!?!?!

So got the heat riser taken care of, and went to do the lean drop adjustment (which I'll post that headache on another thread more suited).

After that it was on to check the air injection.... and CRAP!!! :bang:

No air flow from smog pump.:censor::bang:

So it just keeps going... fix one problem and find another.....

dont live in cali??

that sucks tho.

I do live in Cali, and now that I know the smog pump isn't working it explains my smog failure, or at least the last part of it that I had to figure out.

I will say one good thing, I'm learning a TON about my 60 having to go through all this. Plus I like tinkering, so it's fun and keeps me out of trouble. :grinpimp:
