Hi guys, I haven't been on here for awhile, recently had surgery so I haven't been awake, nor driving for the past week now. Figured I'd ask this seeing how I'm kind of bored and just want people's opinions.

What have you done to dress up/update your interiors? I love my '98 and while the exterior is still rather contemporary looking, especially after the facelift I gave it, the interior is still somewhat... lacking. Especially after driving my mom's LX570 for a week and working with Range Rovers all day at my last job, the interior is so bland.

I'd like to liven it up a bit but I do not want to go cheesy-a** fake wood everywhere, I like the understated look of the Land Cruiser interiors vs the LX but is there anything I can do to bring it into the 21st century without going overboard?

Cheers,

Rich

Updating the Audio system with a touch screen helps, but I'm not sure there much you can do. Maybe adding LED to the dash lights.

The 2003-2007 models look much more "modern".

I plan on getting one of these someday. Should make a big difference.

Yeah I updated my head unit and speakers with a new Kenwood DDX371 touchscreen awhile ago.

Helped to a certain point but the interior is still too 90s looking for lack of a better term. Don't get me wrong, I like the understatedness over the LX interior, but being exposed to a bunch of newer vehicles has me in the mood to do some updating.

Even painting certain console/switch panels may help, I just don't know where.

I too thought about a new steering wheel, not there's anything wrong with mine, but a wood and leather one would look outta place with no other wood trim.

Wood steering wheel, wood trim pieces, new head unit, CB radio, and some accessory switches help me spruce up my interior.

They also come in black. The leather grip is just a little different.

*edit*. Just realized your interior is tan.

@Ulysses do you have a link for the steering wheels? If I could get one with leather to match the beige (ivory or whatever) LX leather, that'd be sweet! My steering wheel needs fresh leather anyway and I dig the scalloped hand holds.

Also did new steering wheel and double din nav unit which helped. Another little thing was swapping the cluster bulbs for LED bulbs. Was pretty easy and really looks much better at night in my opinion.

It looks better than mine, I did the LED conversion a few years ago but there are some spotty areas on some of the gauges.

In the end, I was so annoyed with the removal and installation process and the have to make sure the orientation of the LED bulb contacts was correct that I just left it all in.

Which bulbs did you use? I might give it another try just for the heck of it.

Not sure of brand, they were the brightest ones I could find with I think 5 smd's each, four around the body and one on top so the amount of light was enough to go through the channels and fill everything quite well. The polarity thing is a pain, I eventually just had the cluster leaning forward so I could get my hands in there while it was plugged in and lights on to get them all oriented the right way.

Just my 2 pennies... I have a '94 FZJ80, and one of the things I LOVE about it is the old azz interior. It's character. It's functional. It's history.

Don't be ashamed! =)

The new steering wheel really makes the interior feel better to me - I think the overall design looks really good for a 12+ year old vehicle. My wife's new GX460 is slicker, but the layout is remarkably similar.

I am too looking for some ideas! new to the LX and think the interior is a little bland. Any aftermarket speaker grills? Upgrade the graphics on the stock nav??

This. I love my 94s interior. Basic. Functional. Has all the bells and whistles it needs.

New(er) cars are full of cheap plastic bits for most part. Why do you want to emulate that? I can understand adding a head unit or getting a new steering wheel if your leather is trashed, but I prefer period correctness. Less is more IMO.

I suppose you could always add some gadgets- CB, ham, laptop mount, etc. those can be useful and will detract from the blandness if you feel that way.

That's just it, the 100 Series is still contemporary enough to look a few years old vs the wonderful vintage 60s and 80s which have that old-school character. I've done a few cosmetic upgrades to the exterior of mine and would kind of like the interior to match. Although it is nice when people say, "holy sh*t, your truck is 17 years old?!" haha. I don't have to deck mine out and make it look like a 2015, but certain elements like the door switch panels or the center console could be changed so it's not so blah.

I never said I wanted to emulate the newer, cheaper interiors, all I wanted was ideas from people who might have updated their interiors to a more modern look whether it be painting certain body panels or modifying in any small way. The overall build quality and integrity wouldn't be changed obviously.

I much prefer a 90's Camry interior build quality over the junk Toyota offers today, things are built so cheap.

In the end, it's my truck, not yours, that's what makes it unique ;):)

Of course it's your truck, duh! But, you posted asking for opinions/advice for YOUR truck and that is what you got, which is what a forum is about. If you don't like what folks may say, don't ask.

Currently, more modern IS the cheaper, plastic interior. So when you say you want a more modern interior, that's what you are asking for as I see it. Or perhaps our definition of "modern" differs, which is fine, but you should clarify what that "modern" means to you then.
