Hi,
I have a 83 BJ40 with a B engine. I am in the process of installing a Turbo on this engine. Although it is probably not recommended considering the B doesn´t have piston skirt oil cooling, I´m going ahead cause tha B is pretty gutless. Eventually I plan to install a larger, maybe a 14B engine with this same turbo once the B blows up:doh: .
Knowing this, what gears do you recommend me running in the difs. Considering i want to run 33 or maybe 34" tires?
By the way Its got the stock 4 speed with splitcase transfercase.
I was debating between 4.56 and 4.88. Would 4.88 be too high a gear for freeway speeds, that is 55-65MPH?

Thanks.

depends on the tire size but with the H41 and the 4.56 you could turn 35s easily, stock you have 4.11 which in my opinion are fine for 35s as well witht he turbo...

This partly dependant on whether you live in the hills or on a plain;)

There are plenty of hills over here. So lower gearing is always a plus. What size tire can you run with 4.88? maybe i´ll bite the bullet ad run 37´s or 38´s. Would this be too much tire for a B engine??

if you talk to me then yes that is way too much for the "B" engine, if you talk to Peter then he would say go 53" and quit being a pansy...
the "B" isn't as tough as the 3B nor does it have the horsepower...

It depends what you want my dear friend .. with 4.88 and B 37" is perfect posible .. but nothing moving those donnuts in 3rd .. be happy if you can do in 2nd ..

They will go .. much faster .. not sure .. but go

I've decided to yank the B Motor and intsall a turboed 2h. Can I keep my 4.11's and still run 35's? Got a bitching deal on a used motor and turbo for it, I still need to overhaul it, but i couldn't help myself. :D The B motor even with the turbo is still a dog. :frown:

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

yep,you can keep the gears but the imut shaft is different from the 2H to the B, you will need a different tranny, see if you can find a H55F from a 2H wagon, 12HT wagon or a FJ wagon...
cheers

Yeah, I tracked down a 2H input shaft for my 4 speed as well as a bell housing, but am still trying to get a 5 speed. People that have them don't want to sell...:crybaby:

I did a good share of reading at this forum for the info. Its been a great help.:bounce:

Thanks.
