What gears for 2016+ are best for 35's ? or the 34.8" version of the metric size? or 33's ?

I saw some where on here they have Toyota 4.88's but seems too high for what I use this for.

I have 3.31 factory what they call "THICK GEARS" so the arb locking diff will not fit unless I re-gear to a "THIN GEAR set".

Have factory tires right now with a BP51 lift .. so looking to go to 33's or 34+ as large that will fit?

with new gears.

I use this off road maybe twice monthly; sloppily mud roads weekly; soft sand monthly; minor rock crawling 3 or 4 times a year.
Mostly street and forest trails and some off road.

My math I was thinking 34 / 31.6 x 33.1 = 3.56 gears or near there?

Is that right?

You’ll have more drag with larger AT or MT tires and as a result it’s best to run a lower gear than the basic math would suggest. With it requiring more horsepower to drive at a given speed, more RPMs at a given speed help accomplish that. How much? That’s subjective.

There has been some discussion on this recently.. if you do some digging most of the bases have been covered.

Doesn’t the 8 speed already have a super low 1st gear?

I’m a fan of gears on the 6 speed ( I have 4.88 up from 3.91) but i have read the 8 speed ratio range is fine thru 35s for most. There’s a gear calculation thread Here

The 3.31 OEM gears with the 8 spped work fine "if you do not want to install a front locker".
The front locker do not fit with the 3.31 "thick gears". The lockers need "thin gears" to fit the front diff. The rear fits OK, but the front does not have enough room with the 3.31 gears. BUT I have not been able to find thin 3.31 gears anywhere.

Have you talked to @bjowett yet? He’s a wizard at finding parts like that if toyota ever produced them.

Others who wheel more will chime in, but I have 33s on a 2018, and the gearing is just fine. I actually found it improved the feel of the low-speed-but-not-quite-stopped abrupt shift to first that the 8 speed annoyingly does. It will do the top gear hunt no matter what, it did it with the stock tires, so if you're in the hills just use sport mode and top gear will be 6th. The range on the 8 speed is so good, I can't personally see any benefit to the cost of re-gear unless you are in there to do lockers anyway. Even then, I think the cost/benefit would really be marginal. Spend 10% of the re-gear cost and buy a Pedal Commander, that will make a much bigger and welcome difference in how the 200 feels.
