I'm partial to labs. 2 months ago, I had to put down my 10 year old, 95lb boy. He was a great dog, but he had an aggressive side to him. He snapped at both my sisters and my wife, and he got the wife pretty good. We were able to work things out as it appeared each episode was brought on by pain. He ended up having really bad ear infections and it was his way of letting people know he was in pain as all 3 went to pet him on the head by the ear when he snapped. He was also the type that when he was done playing, he'd walk away and go lay down, which was always fine by me. Well, I've got a 2 year old little girl now that doesn't quite understand. He never got nasty with her, but the fear was always there as I was on edge around the two. Finally, I decided it was time to start over. Knowing his temperment and history, I couldn't give him away. And knowing he lived a full life of 10 years, the best thing was to put him down. It was hard, but my daughter's safety comes first. Although I had these issues, I wouldn't hesitate getting another lab. They are great dogs. I just didn't know about the ear issue, and I had a s***ty vet, so it was my fault he turned out the way he did. If I would've cleaned his ears frequently, then he'd still be around today as I don't think he would've formed the temperment he had. We just recently got another dog. We were going to get a black lab, but I came across some free border collie/lab mixes. So far, I'd have to say this is one of the smartest pups I've ever had. He was potty trained w/in a week and picked up on basic commands very quick. Right now, he's 5 months old and just over 25lbs. He's got the border collie tail and print, but has more of the lab face and a mixture with his body. I think I'll always have a dog that's either lab or part lab.

well... after visiting the animal shelter, the humane society and various rescue groups weekly for the past few weeks, we finally met our match.

he is slated as a collie/lab mix. your guess is as good as mine. after taking your considerations carefully and talking with my wife we did like the "lab mix". however, there is no way to know unless you know one of the parents. they say he is a lab mix? well i checked out berners and gsm dogs and he looks just like them.

anyway, we love him - he is so big for now we just call him moose.

he sure is handsome.

PS - i am not stealing a thing from your yard. is he a big goofball? i love it when i see a bog dobe and they end up being a huge loving goofball.

Yes. He is such a nut. He's like 10 months old so he is still very much a playful puppy.

Hey Peepers congratualtions on the new addition...sounds like Moose found a great home:cheers:

Hey 74 UA FJ, your dobie is a beautiful dog..reminds me of a friends dobie "Rommel" that was over 100lbs, tall as hell, muscled up, HUGE canines...a real badass looking dog...they always said he was just a big lapdog but he always scared the s*** out of me!! All I could think is "you would never get that big bastard off if he attacked". Dobies are cool though.

I had my dog 10 yrs before having to put her down, now with kids we are in dog shopping mode this year.....Anyone have experience with Blue Lacys...we are looking at them. A working class, ranch sort of dog, kinda like a small weimeriener(sp?), medium size, short sleek coat.
Supposed to be great dogs. Anyone know?

A quick note on the size of your dog's poop. If your dog is leaving huge piles, you are probably feeding him crappy dog food. The cheap crap at Sam's, walmart, etc...is no good, it's all filler garbage (think corn), it just passes thru with little nutritional value and makes huge piles.

Do your friend (your dog friend) a favor and get him some good nutritional dog food...ask your vet...you'll pay a little extra, but it makes a difference!!
My dog was a BIG animal, I fed her the good stuff, and her piles were very average, she was very healthy too.

Dog looks great Peepers. My wife and I looked long and hard at the Bernese Mtn. Dogs. They are awesome! We will probably end up with one at some point. Your pup definitely looks similar to a Bernese.

The nice thing is that you took your time and found the right dog for you, regardless of the breed. Too often people won't do that. But the ones who do generally end up with really wonderful dogs. My parents just did the same thing. Ended up with a dog that never even was on their radar, a standard Poodle. I'm definitely not a "poodle guy" but this pup is awesome! So anyway, good work. Post up some more pics as he gets bigger.

Thanks. Mine is around 88 pounds now at 10 months, and he still has a lot of filling out to do. His pop was just over 100 with no fat on him at all, so I think mine is going to be around that.

thanks box rocket. poodles rock by the way.

its fuzzy but here is one of the dogs i grew up with:

Great looking dog- glad you found one that works for you guys.

Just an FYI- If it is a greater swiss Mtn dog- it will break your 45lb limit by a longshot. We ran into one with our 130Lb female saint bernard, they were pretty close in size and weight.

He will be one smart dog, weve always heard that if they have a really weird shaped head that they are smarter! My doggy is a Retriever/White Lab/Husky Cross. I dont have any good pictures... She is AWESOME! She could sit/speak/stay/wait/rollover/kiss/shake/ and what ever else you want her to do within 30mins of training. She got fat now that schools back in cause i cant play with her... Shes 9months now. heres some pics
First day we had her. Our well was out of commision. She ruined our showers for the day...

Peepers - that puppy is adorable! Hopefully he won't get too big. The shelter told me my mixed breed would be large and she ended up being about 50 lbs. And she is a heck of a lot smarter than our purebred dog! Fortunately he is loveable...cause he is dumb as a box of rocks.
