what diesals can you manage to get into a mini?

I remember reading a thread over on Pirate a few years ago by a guy that was swapping a VW TDi engine into a mini-truck, it was pretty cool. He actually was also doing a complete frame-off at the time, great pics. Might wanna look for it, it's a good engine.

There's an engine often used in Misu Fuso box/delivery trucks that is also supposed to make a good swap.

Mine is an 84, I was thinking going domestic? If there is a domestic what adapters are out there.

:DI searched the faq:flipoff2:

Why domestic? Just for cheap?

I would go with a 1KZ-T or 1KZ-TE. The end.

But, if I were open to non-Toyota diesels (I'm not), I'd look at the 1.9 TDI and the Mercedes diesels. Neither of those are *domestic,* but I don't know of any good domestic diesel options for a mini truck. The 4BT *might* fit, but you'd need one heckuva lift to clear the oil pan. There are some good Isuzu options too. Isuzu diesels are very, very high quality. I'd rank them right there with the Toyota and Hino diesels. The *domestic* diesels have all the benefits of a diesel, but they also are loud, rattle-ey and dirty by comparison to the Toyota and Isuzu diesels.

I have actually had TDI's in mind for some time. I just have a woody for one:grinpimp:.

Thank you for the heads up...no clue it was there

VW without the turbo.....lets keep it simple and cheap thats why I am not getting a toyota engine unless its dirt cheap;)

no...I have a 22R

The 3RZ would be a better swap if you had the 3.0L.......
I was thinking the bellhousing that Marlin has was RZ to W bellhousing but it's RZ to R, sorry.

I don't think you could pay me enough to swap VW parts into my Toyota. Just seems wrong. :2cents:

Search the diesel section, not just the faq, as well as toyotadiesel.com and 4btswaps.com, some good info there too

Some options that have been done before that I am aware of and/or options for you to consider
Toyota - 2L, 2LT(E), 3L, 5L, 1KZT(E)
Cummins B3.3, perhaps 4bt
Mercedes - OM617
VW 1.6 & 1.9 (both tdi and non)

excellent info guys, I see I have much reading to catch up on:cheers:

You do. And it will all point to 1KZ-TE. 2nd choice would be 3L with a turbo from a 2LT-E (this is what we have planned for the :princess: '85 4-runner).
