First real road trip since the Sniper install. My tires are taller, 17.5% difference from the odometer. Average mpg for the last 3 months is 12.09 mpg. Best is 15.09 mpg (corrected). It doesn't seem very good but driving it is way better. It pulls grades like it never has before. Much less time in 3rd and not getting passed nearly as often.

The improvement in performance is remarkable. I'd recommend the sniper to anyone who is desmogging.
What size tires are you running? Did you go bigger before the Sniper install or while you had the Sniper. I am debating going bigger than 185/70/R16.

For those of you that have done sound deadener installs, what did you do with the holes on the top of your wheel wells? I've got a rubber plug in each that looks OEM. I was going to have a bodyshop weld them closed unless they serve a specific purpose.

Was looking to have the wheel wells lined with something as well while they are there.

Just my opinion but I'd be wary of liners especially in the wheel well since there will inevitably be rust in the metal seams there which will be trapped by the liner and it will continue rusting underneath and spread, never drying out and you won't see it rusting under the liner. I prefer paint that bubbles with rust so you see it. In the wheel well there will be more rocks chipping the paint so you might want to try something like what Toyota uses as a liner. But I wouldn't take it over the seams, I'd leave them exposed with only paint so you can monitor what's happening there. And I'd try to keep the plug. If you can leave some of the backing on the sound deadener over that area then it won't stick to the plug.

I chose 295/70/17. Actual 33's. I had BFG's (33 10.5) that were actually 31.5. I changed while still tuning. BFG'S are great but I'm loving the discovery ST Maxx.

The ol 4-speed works well with the Sniper, 33's on today's roads. 2800 rpm is about 75 and a sweet spot. With the BFGs it was 3000 rpm.

If you tap on the rear quarters you will hear the tinny sound is mostly at the top half. I applied 80 mil kilmatt to the top 2/3rds and to to wheel wells and it was the best use of the crap. I didn't notice any holes. Will you snap a picture?

What i did to my 60 this weekend:

6 weeks from putting the 5.3 in between the frame rails, it fired up first key turn. What an amazing feeling! Pulled the 2f 8 weeks ago, so far im in it 8 weeks overall total. First ever motor swap ever. All done in my driveway haha Gotta say, its going great! Not too shabby for a lame corporate accountant hah

How awesome, we need more of that sound!

Unfortunately i only get this week and one road drive with the monster sound of open headers :/ I am driving it to a friends house who has a big band saw to cut out my stainless exhaust and it will be tamed down quite a bit.

Right now i have about 8 inches of exhaust pipe coming out of each manifold, just enough to hold an o2 sensor on there so it can idle and run. Im not going to lie, its going to be pretty sweet driving it with open headers 2 miles to my buddies house!

Ol' gal got some fresh KBro2's. Love your rigs rolling around on 34's and 35's, but I sure love this size. (33x10.5R15)

Front passenger shock bushing on the bottom managed to back its way out somehow. Lost the hardware and bushing. Noticed it clanking around on the way home the other day.

Managed to make a temporary solution. Got an M12x1.25x40mm from the hardware store and cut it down, added some big washers, and cut up some old HFS shackle bushings I had laying around. Heated up the mounting stud red hot and then slid the bushing over since it didn't quite fit.

Do you run the complete Ironman lift? How’s the ride?

I’m not set on a coating yet, I was going to let the body shop make a recommendation. Just want a fresh coat of something to prevent rust.

got a picture here. You can see two other holes in the trunk floor where something was removed at some point. They’re too round to be accidental.

Of course I have no idea what body shop you are talking to but I'd beware. It's every shop's incentive to sell you a fancy coating that may do more harm than good. The below treatment was recommended by some shop somewhere. This stuff destroyed our '84 Tercel many years ago. Thankfully the previous owners of my '82 land cruiser didn't put anything on it and it's in better shape than many 10 year old vehicles today.

Thank you. I don't remember seeing that hole in my 87. If it is there, I covered it with kilmatt and 10mm closed cell foam to pad it.

The 255/85r16 looks like a great choice for our 60/62's.
Mine rub a bit on the front fender lip when articulating. The 1.25" spacers change the geometry where as if I had 80 series axles I don't think it would rub at all. I will probably add a custom bump-stop to rig it. I wanted a little wider tire because of the blow-sand and it did help, but narrower tires are better over-all especially in the mountains.

Yeah, I've been debating tire size again after meeting up with @ntdb and learning that the 33x10.5x15 KO2s actually measure <32"… they're properly skinny but not as tall as I'd like. The 255/85R16 is a good option for MT but doesn't come in any useful ATs with a snow rating, so at that point you're looking at a 255/80R17 which is available in the Toyo AT3.
