What sort of mileage has the engine done? It’ll be interesting to see what wear if any in major components.
There was zero back blow when running so my plan is to do a compression test before installing the manifolds. The inside seemed to be in really good shape.
I got the broken exhaust hanger replaced, and as a bonus, got a less-restrictive muffler installed…apparently a previous owner installed a baffled muffler designed for a gasoline engine! With an appropriate tubodiesel muffler installed, it spools sooner, and carries boost a bit further into the rev range. I’m really happy with the results.

More rust…more things to replace. Having had to drill out the m14 nuts on the hoops retaining rear axle to leaf springs.
It would seem these have 8 leaves per spring. Quite beefed up.

Hard work!
Just got back from a four day trip in the Four Corners region visiting various arch sites... The Cruiser performed excellently. Temps got into the low teens but the Webasto diesel heater kept us warm at night. Only did some very light wheeling, mostly ledgy steps and off-camber, sandy, rutted doubletrack (if you've been out in this zone, you know it all too well) with a lot of side-hill. I made it from our house out to the Moab region and back on one fill up of the main and aux tank. Averaged 22 MPG with the R2.8. Here's a selection of images.

Gotta get you out there with us one time. You'll love the canyon scrambling on foot we do. No trails, just straight down (and then straight up).
HZJ78 in for some maintenance and a new factory windshield before it heads south into Central America.
