Hi All:

Wayne, so sorry to hear about Crusher's condition! :frown:

My thoughts are with him (and you!)

Josie is now about 11 y.o., and our other dog Whiley is perhaps even older. Things will be rough around when they go! :frown: :crybaby:

Best Regards,

Alan

i absolutely HATE this part of a dogs life. old age, when they are best behaved, most loving and yet we can watch them heading for that part in life that leaves us with a huge hole in our hearts and visions in our minds.

so today i took him for a walk and he barely made it 4 truck lengths before he sat down and leaned against my leg looking up at me. "want to go back?" and he got up and headed back for the truck.
at lunch time i gave him 2 asprins and at 4 i took him for a truck ride and decided to try and walk him again and it was night and day. he walked along so much better, he did have a short ooops while peeing on a bush. his stool was tight and normal color. his eyes didn't show hurt. his front paw stayed on the ground much longer.

hopefully i will have more good news tomorrow. a glimmer of hope is affecting my heart.

thanks for the kind words guys.

cheers

Wayne, if your not already doing so, give him Ascriptin instead of regular asprin, it's got Maylox in it (buffer for the stomach)..Who'd a thought, but dogs are more prone to ulcers than us humans.

We're rootin' for you guys.

ask yr vet for the latest pain med (not rimadyl, there's another w/o the impact on liver).

meds are part of feeding for my crew: starts w/thyroid around age 4, have house-sat dogs on multiple meds. quality of life is what it's all about, sounds like Cruiser is well loved and cared for.

best wishes continue.

he is doing much better today, went for a nice stroll with no ill side effects. no peeing on his foot, lifting leg well and peeing on stuff from both sides. putting decent pressure on front paw. appetite is back, not quite normal but in a way i am glad, he was eating too much before. truck ride with ability to sit on both haunches without the painful look in his eyes.

almost normal again, i am a happy guy again.

thanks guys or all the kind words and suggestions.

cheers

here are some pics of the old boy doing what he loves... feel free to add yours if you want.

Great news!

If I were a dog, #1 on my bucket list would be to ride around in a 70 series....

Lucky dog..;)

yep, the daily driver is a PZJ70 ragtop in the summer and now his winter ride will be a PZJ78.
cruiser in the ragtop:
this was his last wheeling trip
the next generation wheeling buddy in training.

as soon as i head out the door, Cruiser and Billie are right behind me and then wait to see which vehicle we are taking.

i always said if i were a dog, i would want to be one of mine because i couldn't imagine anyone loving their dogs as much as i have and do. you have proven me wrong. i would diefinitely want to be one of yours. i'm glad to hear Cruiser is doing better... makes my heart smile

great news, the whizzing on both sides! might've just tweaked a disk, and rest let it get sorted out.

love the 3rd shots in #28 n 29: they both look so content.

choose to leave this thread bout your kiddos, but thanks for the offer.

Feel free to post up again in any of the Chat pet photo threads: will be linking them to my pet project, which yr Cruiser inspired. ;)

so an update
he is doing 'all right', the dribbling is down to his first pee of the morning and even then not everyday.
he is a lot slower at getting up from sitting.
he is getting 2 asprins and 2 glucoseme and a chunk of liver every morning and 1 + 2 + a chunk at night.
the little guy got all excited and knocked him over a couple days ago and he whined for a bit but seemed to bounce back.

it is sad to see him like this but he is happy with 1/2 mile walks, riding in the car/truck, lazing around chewing on his bones (playing keep away when ever he sees me looking at him with a bone in his mouth). so as long as he is happy then so are we, maybe he will make it through the winter but we will need to be careful on the ice with him. we have one room with lino in it and he HATES that room. real hard for him to get up from sitting down so the renos on the school house will need to wait till after he passes on.

just saw this thread in the new section and thought i would post an update.

cheers guys and thanks Woody for this section (if you happen to be reading this)

3 years, almost to the day, the time has come.yesterday he didn't want to get up. his hips were really sore.
i told Berni "i think today is the day".
i got him to stumble to the road and suddenly he was off. he walked to the barn and back, something he has not done for a couple weeks now. as if to say "sorry, today is NOT the day". then off for his Saturday truck ride into town and on the way back he started barking when we came near the bush that he usually walks in so i stopped and helped him out and off he was again. for the last couple months i had hold of his tail just incase he stumbles or his hips would weaken and i could let him down gently.
but this time, i held his tail and away he went.

this morning he couldn't get up. we carried him to the car and he road in the back for another drive around. we stopped a few times and lifted him out but he didn't want to walk ... well couldn't walk. brought him back home and made him comfortable in the back yard and now he is in the bunkie enjoying the heat from the wood stove.
his eyes are bright, his appetite strong, he is holding his urine (he can't stand long enough to pee), he talks and is very alert to everything around him. but his joy is gone so it would be selfish to keep him alive for our personal needs.
tomorrow morning he is heading to the vet for the final visit.

3 years, what a trooper. the only part of having a pet that sucks big time ... saying good bye.

Sorry to hear Wayne, my condolences to you and yours.

Very sorry to hear this Wayne, you've given him a great life, and he'll always be with you.

thanks for the kind words.
the emotions have calmed down a bit, the wife is taking it pretty hard.
our other dog is doing okay, she was great monday, seemed fine yesterday but this morning she appeared to be looking for something ... her grooming day is today so that will take her mind off what ever it was.

i wanted to plant a tree near the grave but wanted something different. ended up getting a Sumac (the one that turns red in the fall instead of yellow) from a Mennonite neighbor who also helped plant it. next spring Berni is planning on getting some of the local wild flowers to plant right on top of the grave.

i might be going a bit over board this time around but the happiness and contentment he brought the family is worth the effort.

thanks again guys.
