Good to know,
Would you guys recommend something to protect the tranny and transfer? I have nothing covering the bottom of them, that old cover came off a while ago, it just caused more rust on the frame anyways.

The factory tcase - tranny cover are really good, for normal off road .. ( maybe less tough in real rockcrawling )

For the initial question, I thought your friend was thinking that your Land Cruiser are the same Jeep Thing .. ! :grinpimp:

But NO .. your Land Cruiser are one of the most tough off road vehicles in the world .. !

Do not go offroad without a skid plate under the tranny and t-case. The Split case is super strong, much stronger than the traditional Land Cruiser transfercases, but I still would not want to smash it down hard on a rock. You might crack the cast aluminum.

I have to laugh at Peter's comment above. He is being modest-I suspect he has wheeled and modified a 60 series more than anyone on the planet. His rig is SICK with 53 inch  tires. That isn't a typo. I've bent several stock tie rods on my FJ40, and agree with the need for stronger ones in an FJ60.

somehow I bent my skid plate over the txcase. together they rubbed. took me forever and ford mechanic to find that damm noise. it made a groan everytime I started off on the road. I thought it was my brakes locking up, which they were........

really it took forever to find it. I did many searches under the truck to no avail.

I had to do a provincial insp. so I took the mech for a ride and re enacted the sound. he found a tiny spot where they touched. bent it back and the sound has been gone.

I never did any rock crawling. just got hung up on some grass mounds. Probably would have been better off with out it. Definately would not have given my 8 months of searching for mysterious noise.

I even posted on here many times complaining about it...........
