Hey All! I keep running into the same search results and cant seem to dial in an accurate answer (or at least one I'm looking for)

Here's the situation:

22R engine temp would not get up to temp (heater blew luke warm)
Replaced the thermostat and then a couple days later was working on a carb issue
and was idling and a very subtle ringing noise appeared.. closest sound I can compare is like a wet finger around the rim of a crystal glass. (A high pitch ringing noise). This is ONLY at idle, not any higher....i.e. 1000 rpm +

Now before you tell me it's a belt or my alternator...keep reading.
There is no play in the WP and fan, no leaking, I took off the belt and spun everything, and the WP is the culprit, but it's still smooth and the sound is coming from the belt pulley metal bell shaped thinga-ma-cover. in fact I can tap it and it;s the same pitch.

Ive never heard a bearing go so high pitched and most post I read talk about a grinding sound etc....

any help greatly appreciated, I just dont want to panic if I dont need to:wrench:to.:wrench:

Vacuum leak. Get a can of starting fluid and spray it around. If your idle jumps up you found the leak.

Power steering pully or ideler pully? Mine got pretty high pitched when it started going out.

Appreciate the comments. still trying!

no on the vacuum leak, It's intermittent. (at idle) sometimes I pull up to a stop sign and it starts ringing…..then stops……then starts…??

No idler pulley - no powersteering/ only things on belt are crankshaft, WP and alt.

One guy told me to just drive it and it'll probably go away….. just a result of sitting for 2 years…???

I just don't want to me 100 miles from home out in the desert to only then find out what the real problem is… Rather fix it now. but in the same line I don't want to throw any unnecessary monies at it.

It wasn't on a Toyota but I have had a whining noise from a water pump before which ended up being the front seal rubbing noisy on the shaft. I replaced the pump, it was a early 2000s GM Truck with an LS motor... 4.8 or 5.3 or something.

Possible vacuum leak associated with brake booster. Have one on the wife's Yaris.
