Want to get a programmed key for 99

If you search on here and the web, you can find the programming instructions to do it yourself. You can get the key housings on Amazon or ebay for pretty cheap if you don't want the OEM ones. You might also be able to get the remote fob for inside the key aftermarket, or you should be able to get a key that does not have the remote in it. Hope that helps.

i had a master made at ACE Hardware programmed and cut for $75... not OEM but gets the job done

My dealer a couple weeks ago charged me 35.00 for a master key, non remote, cut and programmed to the truck, which they did on the spot. I had to ask them twice if the price was right. 15 minute deal.

Where do you live?

Not sure, but I think I've read on MUD that a Camry remote key (or one of those) works. Not sure if i'm dreaming or what, but a 10 minute search wouldn't hurt! You can also try and fine used ones cheap that has only the working electronics. I've had to solder the wires in mine to make all the buttons work but it's not hard if you have a small soldering iron and magnifying desk lamp.

Do you have the receipt? I'd like to know what part number key they used. I recently had two keys made at the dealership. First was an Eternity Key replacement for my remote key. Cost me ~65 bucks. Second time I asked for a non-remote master key and they made me a valet key. I had some discussion with them and it turns out that that is all they can do. I haven't programmed it yet (they wanted ~30 bucks to program it).

As an aside, does anyone know what makes a valet key? From looking at the two keys, it seems as though the outer edge is different. Is that what makes it work in the glove compartment and rear hatch?

You need a key with transponder chip 4C:

I bought an OEM Toyota key off ebay, had it cut...programmed shortly thereafter. It's cake.

Pasted from a post by CruiserDan in the "lost keys" thread:

<snip>
It is possible to use a plain master like in say, a Camry, so that you do not have to spend ~250 bucks for a key with the buttons in the head.

For 98-02 use 89785-26020
for 02-07 use 89785-60160
<end snip>

part number...

89785-26020 under description stated: DR338 TRANSMI

out the door, cut and programmed. 31.65

***edit*** looks like Cdan confirms it above, the part number anyway, guess cost will vary***

Good luck.

I'm doin this!!

Yeah, I wasn't thinking. That Camry key won't work with the LX. I'm guessing that aftermarket is the only way to go. At least my dealership is pretty reasonable with the cutting cost.
