So am getting a proper fridge / freezer for the family for Christmas. I have decided on a Waeco based on excellent reviews from Mud users and price.

I can get the 80 quart model for $750 + S&H and the 50 Quart for $580 + S&H.

I checked the dimensions and found that they will both fit on my cargo shelf but the 80 qt. model is 18 pounds heavier (62 vs. 44 lbs). 44 pounds is already not light.

Anyone have experience with one of these or both? Is the extra weight worth the extra storage? Also, with the 80 quart, I will not be able to fit a standard ice cooler with my camping setup so everything has to fit in the waeco. With the 50 quart unit I can still fit a small ice cooler.

Thanks.

if you think you'll need a cooler on top of a 80qt one, you must have a big family indeed.
I've got a 63L and I usually put 2 gallons of frozen water in as drink reserve and cooling aid and I still haven't been able to fill it up completely with serious perishables on multiday trips... You can put a lot of stuff in a 80qt fridge for sure...

I don't have a big family - I just want to make sure that EVERYTHING will fit if I get the 80 quart - drinks, food, etc..

Right now I use a 40 qt. thermoelectric cooler and I always bring another ice cooler for drinks.

I would really prefer the 50 qt. for the lower weight but I am intrigued by the extra capacity of the 80 qt.

If 40 qts was sufficient w/o drinks, then 50 qts w/ drinks should work for you. Besides, you don't usually store all the drinks at once in the fridge . i.e. Store 8 cans, take two, leave two.

To add more choices, there's a new CF-60 coming out. Same footprint as the CF-50, just taller.

it is advantageous from a cooling / preservation / energy / battery drain point of view to fill up the fridge at the beginning of the trip with everything you'll need for the trip -provided it's all cold from the start- rather than having it partially empty and adding stuff as you use stuff up.

I don't think you drink beer. You know how big my cooler would need to be? :hillbilly:

actually, that is a Temperance League-endorsed benefit of a small fridge. Puts a limiting factor on beer consumption... :)

unless, of course, you like the real good ones, which should be drank (drunk?) at room temp... :D

Throw in the warm drinks whenever you are planning to be driving the vehicle, and I don't think you will have any problems, getting them cooled down.

I hope your'e not serious about the room temp thing - that's a sin. The whole thing about Germans drinking warm beer is a myth by the way - they don't, I know, I am. :p

The 50 is a good size, I can't imagine having a physically larger fridge in the back of my 80. I've been running a Waeco 50 for 2 1/2 years and haven't had any trouble. Just a for instance, I left the fridge full of various beverages from Cruise Moab '09(May) to Black Hills '09 (July) in the Kansas heat with only one battery set on the low setting. On a handful of the hottest days it did crank slower than normal but never left me stranded. The 80qt is just huge unless you have a herd of kids or serious drinking hobby.

I have a Waeco 50 as well and that thing is pretty big, so big I would have to rip out my back seat to make it fit in my BJ42, so it will be housed in trailer, but I do like it.
