w56: Whats the metal pipe do and should it have a hose or something?

Hmm... Either I'm missing something or I think you're looking at a different part. In the guts of the trans back end there's a metal pipe that kind of looks like an aqua duct. It goes from the steel plate in the middle to the transfer case end of the trans. I think I've determined the rubber bit is a gasket to seal the pipe to the steel plate but I'm not 100 percent sure and m still not sure what it's for

That diagram you listed is a transfer case and adapter, not a W56. In the transfer case those 'pipes' are as you called them 'aqueducts' to catch oil that has been slung around and to direct and deliver that oil to the bearings. Yes they are important

Red circle looks a lot like my w56 housing to me. :)

Yellow circle is the pipe in question.

Anybody got a name or p/n for the little rubber grommet on the tip? Or would a small chunk of rubber hose do the trick?

No can do. I'm out of town right now. Trying to sort this out so that parts arrive when I get back to it

That thing in red is technically not the transmission. It's call the "transfer adapter", or extension housing, that mates the transmission to the transfer case. It does contain the shifter linkage, and a few gears ... so I guess you can say it's part of the tranny. The bits to the right are the transfer. The tranny would be to the left and is not pictured.

Oh, I have no idea what those are. I've never seen them. The pipes in the transfer case don't look anything like the picture.

As per ToyoDIY, the part is:

33124E - PIPE, OIL RECEIVER(FOR TRANSFER) P/N 33106-35010

Based on the FSM, it looks like a transfer pipe between the transmission and transfer case:meh:

I don't remember seeing any fluid equalizing pipe on mine (w56 B). I know for a fact there's a seal between he tranny and transfer case, no fluid mixes between the two. I know this because I put redline MT 90 in the tranny because of the yellow metals, and redline 75/90 in the transfer case because of the gears needing extreme pressure additives.

@BigMike should know.

I believe it's the shift forks for all forward shifting transfer case assuming he has also w56-c or later

The pipe does not transfer fluid between the transfercase and transmission. It transfers fluid between the two sections of the transmission, which i guess would be the transmission and extensions housing (the section directly below the shifters) where the furthest back bearings are.

snobdds is correct that the trans and transfer are sealed from one another on the w56.

Mine is out of an 85 pickup so i believe thats the w56a? Mine is topshift.

Fwiw I ended up shaping a chunk of oil-hose to act as a gasket to replace the mangled rubber bit. Looks like it should to the job. Ill let you all know if the tranny blows because of it :)
