Vortec 5.3 or 5.7 for my 60?

For ease and simplicity, I think you are right... a carb 350 might be the best bet. I think youll find that a vortec is a lot of work and headache, but thats half the fun!

Someone sugested that a tbi 350 produced more torque than the 5.3 or 5.7 is this true?

simply put: that's a load of crap!

the frame is more than strong enough. we usually run 12-18" scab plates on the inside of the frame rails where the engine gets mounted. the split cases are also plenty strong and so are the axles. i think a 6.0 with the 4L80e would be your best bet if you're going to tow a lot. i'd try to find a set of the fj62 front backing plates to help keep the brakes cool. some better rotors and calipers might be in order as well.

I also pull 8-9k with my 6.0 pickup and It does it at 75-85 no problem. This is a 24ft enclosed trailer so you get a lot of wind resistance as well. 6.0s handle under 10k with ease.

If your towing that much buy the 6.0 and get a 4l80e. Your don't have to mess with the motor, you bolt it in and it will haul ass right out of the box. Like I said in this combo they last forever and take unbelievable punishment. a 4l60e will be pretty taxed towing those kind of weights.

Tbi are the best bang for your buck throw on vortec heads intake and a cam and you can have 280-300hp 350lbs of torque without spending much. Just for a comparison my 6.0 makes like 300hp and 380lbs of torque, which is an lq4, lq9s make 350hp and similar torque. the newer ly6s would be harder and quite a bit more to install but make 350hp.

The 6.0 lasts forever though it wins in longevity. When I bought mine I talked to a couple guys who run them for fleet vehicles and they had a dozen or so that were hitting 300k on original motors.

That aside I'm going to start pulling my trailer pretty soon with the 60. I want to have something with me that can get my bike or buggy out of the desert if something breaks or blows. I'll let you know how the tbi does.

2x4 Lexus GS350 (303H 274T) V6 conversion ???

Hello,
I'm interested in creating an inner city beast. I never use 4 wheel drive want to improve handling & gas mileage. Any thoughts on using a 2007 Lexus GS350 3.5 V6 (303hp - 274lbs t, w/ 6 sp AT) Which FJ is a better candidate? The 62 or the 80? I prefer the 93-94 dash board in the 80). Also, what is involved in permanantly removing the transfer case? Yes, I know this is near sacreligious though, I've owned a 60 years ago and love the durability & reliability of these FJs. I just want to build a vehicle to suit my needs / conditions.
Thanks.

just put a 5.7 in a jeep with 3 tansfercases a 700 r4 5.13 gears and 44 in swampers. it had a tbi 350. as for me, I would rather have a 5.3 or 6.0... better throttle responce , heads, intake design. It runs very well and will do anything you want, but dont have the same snap... All the same problems with wiring and fuel delivery (pain in the ass) but worth it with better deisgn economy and performance. my .02
